Arizona Sports' 2013 Year in Review: Biggest Story of the Year

Note: This is part of a series of posts you'll see over the next week or so on ArizonaSports.com. We had a panel of 16 voters, including all of our on-air personalities, cast votes in several categories like Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Best Moment of the Year and many others.

Enjoy, and feel free to leave your own votes in the comments section below.

There were plenty of stories that pegged the Arizona Sports meter in 2013.

After four long, arduous years, the Phoenix Coyotes finally secured new ownership when the NHL Board of Governors approved the sale of the team to IceArizona in August.

In head coach Todd Graham's second year, the Arizona State Sun Devils clinched the Pac-12 South and hosted the conference championship game in Tempe.

But according to the staff here at Arizona Sports, the state's biggest sports story was the Arizona Diamondbacks' season-long "feud" with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It started in April when D-backs managing general partner Ken Kendrick made national headlines after forcing L.A. fans seated behind home plate to change out of their Dodgers garb.

In June, the two teams played a game of "basebrawl" at Dodger Stadium that featured five hit batsmen, six ejections and eight suspensions.

The next month, former All-Star D-backs' outfielder Luis Gonzalez was "snubbed" by Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig after the 2001 World Series hero tried to engage him in conversation about their shared Cuban ancestry.

And the pièce de résistance: the Dodgers' impromptu pool party at Chase Field after clinching the National League West crown in September.

The Dodgers laughed off a couple of the incidents, claiming that the Puig-Gonzalez meeting was blown out of proportion and that their Caddyshack-like bum rush of the Chase Field pool was not a show of disrespect, but rather a pure act of celebration.

The two teams meet at Salt River Fields to open Cactus League play in February and will travel to Australia to open the season with a two-game set in Sydney in late March. We'll see if the biggest story of 2013 carries over into the new year.
