Manning in Arizona makes sense

It sounds so good doesn't it Jon Bloom? "And starting at quarterback for the Cardinals, Peyton Manneeeeng!!!"

But before you Cardinals fans start saving up for those red #18 jerseys, think about this: assuming the Colts do cut him loose, and assuming he gets a clean bill of health by March 8th, Manning might have a concern or two about coming to the desert.

I know the Cards have arguably the best wide receiver in football. They also happen to have one of the worst offensive lines in the game. Their quarterbacks have been sacked 104 times over the past two seasons, and knocked down another 179 times. They ranked 31st out of 32 teams in sacks allowed in 2010 and ‘11. That's probably not very enticing to a guy who's undergone three neck surgeries over the past nineteen months, and doesn't even know if he'll be medically cleared to play again. I'd say a quality offensive line would make throwing to Fitz more appealing, not to mention a lot easier.

True, Peyton hasn't always had the best offensive line in Indy, but his neck wasn't on the line either.

This means Ken Whisenhunt and Rod Graves need to convince Manning that a stud left tackle is their top priority in the draft. There should be one or two available at number 13, where the Cardinals currently sit. Or maybe it's worth the Cards trading up to try and land USC's Matt Kalil or Riley Reiff of Iowa? Of course, they may want to do that regardless of who their QB is, especially since their current left tackle, Levi Brown, is a free agent.

Aside from a competent (at the very least) offensive line, Manning will also likely want the freedom to basically run his own offense like he did with the Colts. Will Ken Whisenhunt oblige? One would think so. But what if the Cards hire Todd Haley as quarterbacks coach? Could those personalities co-exist?

On the surface, Manning and the Cardinals is a match made in heaven. After all, they have more offensive playmakers than the other two obvious suitors (Dolphins and Redskins), and a defense with a lot of upside (assuming they get a deal done with Calais Campbell).

I think Peyton would be great for the Cards and the entire league. He instantly makes a team looking for its first ever Super Bowl ring an instant contender, and will generate a buzz unlike we've ever seen in these parts before.

  • Yup and Trade Kolb for a 2nd Rnder+

I have no problem with Manning sitting the first 8, making sure that neck is right. Some may disagree, but how many games did Kolb sit? Assuming we make the deal, Manning might just be obliged to accept $12M for 2012 and $18M thereafter. This deal allows the Cards to sign LT Bell, resign Marshall, ext Campbell and draft either Martin or DeCastro. If OT then we resign/ext Hadnot/Lutui. If OG, then sign/ext Brown or Keith at RT. This line will be considerably better than last. Combined an effective run game, amazing QB, WRs with great hands, a great D, and all positions with depth. Nice!

on the offensive line. When I say A LOT I mean A LOT. I'm surprised and critical of them offering Grimm another extension. Another poster came to his offense saying he hasn't had any talent to work with which is true. And to be quite honest (this is my opinion and you don't have to agree) aside from upgrading that O Line and a #2 WR opposite Fitz, the Arizona Cardinals are a very good team...

@Think, resign Brown and Keith? That discredits everything else you said prior. they need to cut those 2, period. And they still need a second wide receiver. But you don't sit Manning, Skelton will not be as lucky and have Peterson and Campbell to save him again. We cannot get off to another slow start.

I think it's a long shot for Manning to come here. If Whiz and Graves stick their necks out and he comes here and it all falls apart then they will be vilified. Both Whiz and Graves will have to have no doubt of Manning's ability to play at the level we all know for them to even pursue him, let alone sign him.

Dale, there is some miscommunication. Brown is a lousy LT, but he is decent on the right side. And, a decent RT is good enough in the short term, WHEN the RG is good. As stated earlier, if we draft DeCastro (RG), who is very good, then sign Keith OR Brown at RT. That would be a solid (not great) right side. Colledge and OT Bell on the left side would be a very solid left. Sendlein holds his own well enough. IMO, this is a B grade O-line, which is more than enough to protect and 'GOOD' QB. Combined, this line also offers running game proficiency.

In regards to a WR...IMO, they are generally overrated. Would I like a speedy #2 to stretch the field? Yes. Are there any WRs available in FA that can fit the bill AND allow the team to be at/below salary cap? Not really. Maybe the cards can get lucky (after singing Manning), cuz no one in their right mind is going to come here w/out big $$$ with Fitz getting the majority of throws and Kolb/Skelton throwing to them. How many balls will they get? 3-4 a game...for #2 money? Stupid! However, Kolb will draw a 2nd rnd pick+ to a Spread O team. Use that pick to draft speedy rcvr.

Get Manning. Trade Kolb for 2nd. Sign OT Bell. Resign Campbell (5yr), Marshall (4), Doucet (3), Haggans (1). Draft: 1st-(OT)Martin or (OG)DeCastro, 2nd(WR), 3rd(SS), 4th(CB), 5th(OLB)Acho's little bro, 6,6,7 - Depth at DT, ILB, OL. Whoever the Cards get in the 1st will change who you sign. This is a very strong O-combo, that fits $$$ and schematically. D-wise, they retain the same starting 11, plus add depth at key spots. I would like to get OLB Williams/trade Dockett, due to scheme, but I can see the org standing by Dockett. Clear?

We are the only city on the country that even thinks we are on the radar for Manning. Washington Miami Tennessee San Francisco Houston all way before the Cardinals on the list of possibilities...

who thinks the Cards should give Kolb this year. He shouldn't take the blame for the line. A defense at the first of the year that put the Cards in pass necessary situations. I know, as someone has stated earlier, every player is an injury away from retirement. But Manning is a serious "cart crash on the way to the practice field" injury from hanging them up. It's easy to want Manning, he is a winner. Everybody wants to win now. If I buy a bird dog and he doesn't do well his first season, I don't take to the shelter and find another one. I give him another season, maybe two. I work with him.

I added this for the neanderthals who will pick apart my analogy. I know hunting and football are not the same. I know there is far more at stake than coming home with your limit. Just remember, this is a game, in the end it really doesn't mean a whole lot. I managed to go on with life after 2008.
