July 3, 2012: Suns free agent visits

The Suns will continue their courtship of unrestricted free agent small forward Michael Beasley when the former No. 2 pick visits Phoenix Wednesday.

But prior to that, it will be Goran Dragic stopping in the Valley. The former Suns guard is due in town today. Dragic is drawing interest from a number of teams that is said to include the Raptors, Nets, Lakers, Hornets and Rockets---which is where he ended last season averaging 16.3 points and 7.3 assists after the All-Star break.

Monday night, the Suns entertained restricted free agent guard Eric Gordon. The Pacers and Rockets have also met with the 23-year-old who was limited to just nine games last season because of a knee injury. Gordon's younger brother, Evan, is a junior on the ASU basketball team which may help the Suns' pursuit. However, any team's offer is expected to be matched by the Hornets. Gordon, according to reports, is seeking a max deal of four years and $58 million.

Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby, General Manager Lance Blanks and head coach Alvin Gentry initially met with the 23-year-old Beasley Sunday in L.A. A league source said Beasley was open and honest with the Suns front office about his past, taking full responsibility for the off-the-court mistakes he made. Beasley's numbers dropped from a career-best 19.2 points per game in 2011 to 11.5 points per game last season in more of a reserve role.

Finally, with regards to Steve Nash, the Suns have yet--- and may not, schedule a face-to-face meeting with the two- time league MVP.

    Future
With how this years FA class is shaking out, if the suns could manage to get a few guys with potential upside to manageable contracts, I would consider it a big win. Right now I am looking at Beasley, Mayo, and Oden. 3 top 3 picks in their drafts, all three have the potential to be superstars in the right system. With a guard like Marshall to get them the ball and a training staff to keep them healthy, we could be a 500 team next year, and much better down the road.

    Free Agents
I was excited for the possibility to get Dragic back, but now that we've drafted Marshall, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, unless it's a short-term deal. Would like Gordon, but don't see NO letting him go. I agree with MMM that Beasley and Mayo are worth a long hard look. Oden, maybe if it's a one year deal laced with incentives.

    Oh man
Please tell me the Oden talk is a joke. The kid has had 3 microfracture surgeries IN THE SAME KNEE. No way to take a flyer on him. Beasley is a headcase and doesn't fit the mold the front office is trying to build ("high character guys"). Regardless, we don't have any shot of landing Dragic or Gordon so we might as well take a shot. Suck for Shabazz 2013!

Beasley has been a headcase for sure, but that sort of talent is worth the risk in my eyes as long as you surround him with a group that will bring the best out in him. You have to take risks if you want to win quick. As for Oden, why wouldnt you take a flyer? We are going to have money avaliable, give him a short term deal, let our training staff work on his rehab, and see what happens. Worst case, he shows his career is over, and we wasted some money. Would you rather waste it trying to hit gold with Oden or waste it on Childress, Warrick, etc.

    Save it for 2012
Don't overpay for players and/or keep them to 1yr deals. The FAs this year are not good, Eric Gordon is the prize FA this year, he played 9 games last year. Decent player, but definitely not worth the max. There are no quick fixes, keep our $$$, no big signings and take your lumps for 1 season. Lets get back into the Top 10 lottery next year AND have $$$ to spend on a much better FA class. Lets give Kendall a year experience and then hand him a lottery pick and a big name FA next year. Oden is a joke - FAIL suggestion

So who do you suggest we hold out for in 13? Chris Paul, Howard, Bynum? They are not coming. Then what? Kevin Martin? David West? Josh Smith? Face the facts - we arent getting a tier 1 superstar via Free Agency. Our best bet is to stock pile young talent through the draft to trade for a superstar (takes a while) or take a chance on a player that has the potential that other teams arent valuing as much right now.

    Oden
I'm not advocating we should get Oden, but for the right price and a one year deal, with our training staff, it might be worth a shot during a season that most believe will be in the tank anyway.
