Looks like Matt Leinart is still not fond of Ken Whisenhunt

Oct 23, 2014, 6:52 PM | Updated: 6:53 pm

The relationship between former Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart and coach Ken Whisenhunt did not exactly end amiably.

Leinart, you may recall, expected to be the team’s starting quarterback following Kurt Warner’s retirement, but struggled during the 2010 preseason and was ultimately passed over for Derek Anderson.

At that point, the team elected to cut the former Heisman Trophy winner whom it had taken with the 10th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Leinart went on to play for the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders, but inconsistency and injuries ended his career after appearing in just two games in 2012.

Whisenhunt, of course, didn’t fare much better, as his search for a quarterback took him from Anderson to Max Hall and then John Skelton before trying Kevin Kolb, Ryan Lindley and Brian Hoyer in the role before being fired following the 2012 season.

Leinart now does some analyst work for FOX Sports 1, while Whisenhunt, following a one-year stint as San Diego’s offensive coordinator, is the head coach in Tennessee.

The Titans are off to a rough start this season at 2-5, due in no small part to the uncertainty at quarterback. Former first-round pick Jake Locker began the season as the starter, but he’s struggled to produce as well as stay healthy, which led to backup Charlie Whitehurst seeing significant action.

He too has struggled, though, and now Whisenhunt is turning to rookie Zach Mettenberger. The sixth-round pick out of LSU will start Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, and that news hit a little close to home for Leinart.
