You’ve undoubtedly heard of switch hitters in baseball.
How about switch pitchers?
Pat Venditte, a pitcher for the Oakland A’s, is just that. The 29-year-old has toiled in the minor leagues for the last seven seasons, but he supplied a couple of highlights on the first day of Cactus League play.
In the third inning, Venditte replaced Rudy Owens on the mound and got San Francisco’s Justin Maxwell to ground out to short while pitching left-handed. He then struck out Brandon Belt looking to lead off the fourth inning as a right-hander.
Those were the only two batters Venditte would face in Oakland’s 9-4 win at Hohokam Park in Mesa.
