The Hampton Pirates got their first NCAA Tournament win since 2001 Tuesday night, when they beat a favored Manhattan team 74-64 in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio.
The reward for the Pirates? A date against the top-seeded and overwhelming tournament favorite Kentucky Wildcats in Louisville Thursday.
Hampton, who entered the tourney with a losing record, is a 32-point underdog against John Calipari’s team.
Pirates head coach Edward Joyner Jr. was asked how big the mountain facing his team was, and he got creative in his response. The sixth-year coach picked up a reporter’s cell phone and talked to Jesus.
Maybe a sign of things to come, even his manufactured conversation with a higher power didn’t go well.
