D-backs Numbers: The good, the bad and the ugly

With MLB on hold until Friday because of the All-Star break, we here at Arizona Sports thought it would be a good idea to take a look back at the first half of the season for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

We’ve given one number for each of the 38 players that suited up in the Sedona Red prior to the Midsummer Classic. Some are pretty flattering. Some, not so much. Others are downright jaw-dropping.

Heath Bell

7.31 – His home ERA of 7.31 is the highest on the team.

Willie Bloomquist

.100 – The veteran infielder is hitting just .100 (3-for-30) at Chase Field. Bloomquist is hitting .429 on the road.

Charles Brewer

1 – Brewer, who was born in Paradise Valley, became the first Arizona-born player who was drafted by the D-backs to pitch in the Majors.

Trevor Cahill

10 – Cahill picked up his tenth loss of the season on June 30 — the earliest he’s picked up his 10th loss in a season (he’s lost 10 or more four times.) His previous early date for picking up his 10th loss was August 1 (2009 and 2011).

Tony Campana

2 – Campana is the only D-back to steal bases in back-to-back games this year. He’s also only played in two games this season.

Eric Chavez

1.038 – Chavez’s home OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.038 is the highest on the team.

Josh Collmenter

6 – All six of Collmenter’s 2013 decisions have come in extra innings. He’s 4-2 on the season.

Patrick Corbin

84 – Corbin has delivered a quality start in 84 percent (16-of-19) of his starts this season — the second-highest percentage in the National League.

Eury De La Rosa

6 – De La Rosa has retired all six batters he’s faced this season.

Randall Delgado

.331 – Despite delivering five quality starts in his six starts this season, opponents are hitting a healthy .331 against the right-hander this year.

Adam Eaton

7 – When Eaton started in center field on July 9, he became the seventh different outfielder to start a game for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013.

Paul Goldschmidt

–.407 – The NL RBI leader is hitting .407 with runners in scoring position — fifth in the NL among players with 50 or more at-bats.

Didi Gregorius

.200 – After hitting .407 in April, Gregorius’ average has decreased every month. The rookie is hitting .200 (6-for-30) in July.

Will Harris

0.73 – The rookie right-hander’s 0.73 road ERA is the lowest on the team.

David Hernandez

5 – Hernandez has allowed eight home runs this season, five have come when he’s got an 0-2 or a 1-2 count.

Aaron Hill

.355 – Hill is batting a hefty .355 in innings seven, eight and nine.

Eric Hinske

18 – Before his release, Hinske’s last 18 at-bats as a D-back were as a pinch-hitter. He hit just .143 (2-for-14) with six strikeouts.

Ian Kennedy

.278 – As pointed out by ESPN’s Jayson Stark, number nine hitters (e.g. pitchers) are hitting an unbelievable .278 against the right-hander in 2013.

Jason Kubel

.684 – Kubel’s first-half OPS in 2012 was .900. This year it was .684.

Alfredo Marte

.300 – The Diamondbacks’ winning percentage in games that Marte started in the outfield in the first half.

Brandon McCarthy

.363 – Opponents are batting .363 when they’re behind in the count against the lanky right-hander.

Wade Miley

2.08 – Miley was outstanding in stretches in the first half. In his first five starts and his last three starts, the lefty was 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA. In his middle 11 starts, he was just 2-7 with a 5.54 ERA.

Miguel Montero

– .651 – Montero’s OPS of .651 is the lowest figure among the 14 qualified MLB catchers.

Wil Nieves

.478 – The D-backs’ backup catcher is raking with runners in scoring position, hitting .478 (11-for-23).

Gerardo Parra

104 – Parra had 104 hits prior to the All-Star break, after having 105 all of last season.

Joe Paterson

3 – Paterson has faced only seven right-handed batters this season, and has plunked three of them.

Cliff Pennington

.666 – Pennington has been outstanding in extra innings this season, hitting a blistering .666 (8-for-12) and delivering two walk-off hits after having just one from 2008 to 2012 with the Oakland A’s.

A.J. Pollock

42 – Pollock his 69 hits this season — 29 of them, or 42 percent, have been extra-base hits.

Martin Prado

5 – Prado showed his versatility prior to the break, as he was the only D-backs player to man five different positions.

J.J. Putz

0.79 – Putz has been lights out at Chase Field, compiling a 0.79 ERA — the lowest of any Arizona pitcher. But his road ERA of 8.10 is the highest of any Arizona pitcher.

Matt Reynolds

36 – Despite Reynolds being a southpaw, left-handed hitters are batting 36 points higher against him than right-handed hitters (.262 to .226).

Chaz Roe

50 – Fifty percent of the batters he’s faced in 2013 have reached base (four hits, six walks.)

Cody Ross

.374 – Ross’ current slugging percentage of .374 would be the lowest of his career.

Tony Sipp

.750 – Opponents are hitting .750 (3-for-4) with the bases loaded against the veteran lefty.

Tyler Skaggs

38 – Home runs have accounted for more than 38 percent of his total earned runs this season.

Zeke Spruill

0.00 – Hasn’t allowed an earned run in two appearances at Chase Field this year.

Josh Wilson

4 – His four RBI in 2013 are more than he had in his two prior stints with the team (2009 and 2011) combined.

Brad Ziegler

74.6 – His groundout rate of 74.6 percent is the highest among any MLB reliever.
