Salpointe Catholic looks for its third consecutive Division II girls golf title Monday (Oct. 28) and Tuesday (Oct. 29) in a cozy field of eight teams and 25 individuals at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.
Also seeking a three-peat in individual compeititon is Salpointe senior Krystal Quihuis, who has led the Lancers to the past two titles. If Quihuis is successful she would be only the third three-time winner in state history. Xavier's Heather Farr (1979-1981) and Grace Park (1994-1996) are the others. Park won her first title competing for Xavier and the other two for Horizon. Tee times Monday (Oct. 28) begin at 10 a.m. and tee times Tuesday (Oct. 29) commence at 8 a.m.
Top competitiors trying to wrest the title from Quihuis are Cactus Shadows junior Abblie Cantwell, Canyon del Oro junior Morgan Messick, Sahuaro junior Desiree Hong and Notre Dame senior Sarah Eversman. Messick was the 2012 runner-up to Quihuis. Hong and Cantwell tied for third. At the 2011 state tournament that quintet finished in the top 10, led by Quihuis (1), Cantwell (2), Messick (3) and Hong and Eversman (tie 9th).
Quihuis has a couple of teammates that finished in the top 13 in 2012 — Araceli Esquivel (tied for 8th) and Claire Hanson (13th) – as Salpointe breezed to a 64-stroke win over runner-up Cactus Shadows. Another to keep an eye on is Verrado's Kaylee Benton, who tied for 3rd last year with Hong and Cantwell.
The eight teams that qualied for the team title are: Cactus Shadows, Canyon del Oro, Catalina Foothills, Lake Havasu, Notre Dame, Sahuaro, Salpointe and Verrado.
