ASU’s 38-33 win over UCLA: By the numbers

Arizona State held on to beat UCLA 38-33 at the Rose Bowl Saturday night, clinching the Pac-12 South title outright.
Here’s a look back at the historic win by the numbers:
1:
With a win over the Bruins, the Sun Devils secured their first ever berth in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Dec. 7. ASU knows it’ll face Stanford, the question is where. If the Sun Devils beat their in-state rivals, the Arizona Wildcats, next weekend the Cardinal will have to travel to Tempe for the conference title game.

Todd Graham’s squad has beaten three ranked teams — UCLA, Washington and Wisconsin — this season. Before Saturday night, ASU hadn’t beaten a ranked team away from Tempe since 2007.

The Sun Devils’ five-point win gives them nine on the year — the most for the program in six years. Back in that same 2007 season, ASU went 10-2 before a loss to Texas in the Holiday Bowl.

ASU’s defense allowed UCLA to get within five in the second half, but managed to hold on thanks in large part to nine sacks of Brett Hundley — the most the Bruins’ offensive line has allowed all season.

With under six minutes to play, UCLA faced a third down and six at the ASU eight-yard line. On the ensuing play, senior safety Chris Young sacked Hundley for a 12-yard loss. Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 37-yard field goal following the sack, and the Bruins’ best chance to retake the lead was thwarted.

Taylor Kelly picked a perfect time for his most efficient game of the season. The junior quarterback completed 76.9 percent of his passes (21-of-26) for 225 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a season-high 97 yards and a touchdown.
168:
Marion Grice was held out of the end zone for just the third time this year, but the senior tailback recorded 168 yards from scrimmage, including a season-high 72 yards receiving.
357:
Although they scored just three points after halftime, the Sun Devils did more than enough in the first 30 minutes of play to get out of Pasadena with a victory. ASU scored 35 first-half points on 357 yards of total offense.
1986:
The last time ASU beat UCLA when both teams were ranked was in 1986 — the same season that the Sun Devils went on to win the program’s first and only Rose Bowl.
2007:
The last time ASU beat UCLA at the Rose Bowl was back in Nov. 2007.
