D-backs break winless streak, beat Dodgers in extras: By The Numbers

Wade Miley was once again a godsend to an otherwise struggling Arizona Diamondbacks starting rotation on Friday, but his work was nearly squandered and he came away without a decision in his team’s 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Miley held the Dodgers to just two hits and one run — a home run off the bat of Scott Van Slyke — over 6.0 innings, walking five and striking out eight.

But the Diamondbacks could only tap Dodgers starter Zack Greinke for one run — a Miguel Montero solo shot. Then, in the ninth with Dodgers pitcher Chris Withrow on the mound, Montero again was the offensive catalyst, singling aboard. Manager Kirk Gibson then made a bold decision to pinch run for his catcher with speedster Tony Campana. And the decision paid off.

Campana swiped his third bag of the season and moved to third base on a Cody Ross groundout before ultimately scoring on a Withrow wild pitch.

The Dodgers had their own ninth-inning magic, however. Closer Addison Reed left a breaking ball up, near Juan Uribe’s waist, which the slugger pulled down the left field line an estimated 462 feet to tie the game.

A conclusion wouldn’t be had until the 12th, when Aaron Hill, who was 0-for-5 on the night, knocked a go-ahead two-run single — scoring A.J. Pollock and Cliff Pennington.

Much-maligned starter-turned-reliever Trevor Cahill then came in for a 1-2-3, 11-pitch frame, recording his first career save and giving the Diamondbacks their first win in over a week.

0-5

In his first game since Aug. 10, 2013, Cody Ross went hitless, 0-for-5, in his season debut, grounding out three times, flying out once and striking out once.

1

The Diamondbacks entered Friday’s contest with an 0-5 record against the Dodgers this season, having won just three of their last 15 games against their division rival. Friday’s gave them their first win against the Dodgers since Sept. 18, 2013.

1.47

Diamondbacks relief pitchers Brad Ziegler and J.J. Putz have combined to allow just three earned runs in 18.1 innings pitched on the season, good for a 1.47 ERA.

2

Miley surrendered just two hits Friday, though walking five Dodgers batters over 6.0 innings pitched. He struck out eight in the start, during which he threw 108 pitches.

3

As a team, the Diamondbacks have logged three quality starts in their first 19 games of the season. Miley has tossed two of those three, after Friday’s fine one-run, two-hit no-decision start.

4.50

Closer Addison Reed saw his ERA climb to 4.50 after surrendering a run in his save opportunity Friday, blowing his first save in four opportunities.

26

After blowing their third save of the 2014 season Friday, the Diamondbacks are on pace to blow 26 saves. Last season, the Diamondbacks blew a major league-high 29 saves.

147

Recently relegated to the bullpen, Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill earned his first career save Friday after previously making 147 career starts. Friday’s appearance was Cahill’s second career relief outing.
