Ryan Rowland-Smith, who was designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday to make room for Cody Ross, cleared waivers Monday and has elected to become a free agent.
The Australia native appeared in six games for the D-backs this year, giving up five runs, four earned, and striking out nine over 7.1 innings.
Rowland-Smith, 31, played for the Seattle Mariners from 2007-2010, but spent most of his time since then in the minor leagues until this spring when the D-backs had him compete for a bullpen role.
