D-backs go 3-4 on road trip, prepare for homestand vs. Phillies, Rockies

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ recent seven-game road trip looked to be shaping up to be a microcosm of the team’s season thus far. But the last two games of the series — and season, for that matter — proved a reprieve from the previous trend.

The Diamondbacks are headed back to Chase Field with three more wins than they had when they departed, thanks in part to a particularly unlikely win on Wednesday. They also return with four more marks in the loss column.

The Diamondbacks had just three outs to get three runs on Wednesday at Wrigley Field, or else they’d be staring down their 19th loss of the season and a series loss to the lowly Chicago Cubs.

They instead rallied for a five-spot ninth inning, earning a sneaky, morale-boosting win which surely propelled their efforts in Thursday’s 5-2 win.

In all, the Diamondbacks went 3-4 on the trip, splitting their series with the Cubs while losing two of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

They were outscored by nine runs in total in the seven games, 26-35, but scored 12 runs over their final two games.

Prior to Wednesday’s come-from-behind win — the first in which the Diamondbacks have rallied from being down three runs or more in the ninth inning since 2011 — they had scored just four runs in their previous three games, getting outscored 9-2 by the Cubs in the second game of that series.

But Wednesday’s ninth inning was surely the U-turn of the series and the trip.

And on Thursday, recent rookie call-up Mike Bolsinger gave the starting staff its fourth win of the season, improving his personal record to 1-1.

The Diamondbacks now carry their second pair of consecutive wins in their first 25 games back to Phoenix, where they’re set to host the Philadelphia Phillies and the Colorado Rockies over a six-game homestand which begins Friday.

Right-hander Josh Collmenter (0-2; 4.50 ERA) is set to take on Roberto Hernandez (1-0; 5.75 ERA) of the Phillies in the series opener Friday. Last season, the Diamondbacks were 3-4 against the Phillies. Their second series of the season against them included a marathon 18-inning game in late August. Headed into play Thursday against the Dodgers, the Phillies had a 10-11 record on the season.

Bronson Arroyo and Brandon McCarthy will face Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett in the final two games of the series.

The Rockies, meanwhile, are 12-11 this season. The Diamondbacks so far are 1-2 against them after one series at Coors Field. Last season, the Diamondbacks were 12-7 against the Rockies, outscoring them 100-66.

The Diamondbacks, now 7-18, will look to win just their second home game of the season Friday. In nine games at Chase Field and two at Sydney Cricket Ground, the Diamondbacks have a 1-11 record in home games.
