Wade Miley, D-backs bats too much for White Sox: By The Numbers

...

One night after getting rocked by a high-octane Chicago White Sox lineup, the Arizona Diamondbacks did some hitting of their own, backing a stellar performance by starting pitcher Wade Miley and notching a 4-3 win.

The Diamondbacks used a three-run fifth inning to take control of a fast-paced pitcher’s duel between Miley and White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana, who exited after six innings, having allowed seven hits and three runs.

Alfredo Marte got the scoring started in the inning with a RBI double down the leftfield line, which scored Gerardo Parra from first base.

But it was the Diamondbacks’ seventh inning, which ended with the bases loaded, that was ultimately the tell-tale frame of the game, as A.J. Pollock scored on a Miguel Montero single, adding an insurance run to Arizona’s then-one-run lead.

They would need it, as the White Sox drummed up a ninth inning rally against their former closer, Addison Reed, scoring a run, but stranding Alexei Ramirez on second base to end the game.

Here’s a look at the win, by the numbers:

0

Diamondbacks pitchers didn’t issue a single walk to White Sox hitters on the night.

.200

Cody Ross found the Mendoza line, as it were, on Saturday, after struggling at the outset of his season, which was delayed due to a hip injury suffered last year. The Diamondbacks outfielder was 3-for-4 on the night with a trio of singles.

0.95

Brad Ziegler’s seventh hold of the season dropped his season ERA to 0.95. He needed just 14 pitches to mow through the White Sox’ side in the eighth, allowing a hit and striking out one.

3

Miley improved to 3-3 on the year with the win, which dropped his earned run average to 4.82. He made few mistakes in the outing, issuing no walks and allowing just four White Sox hitters to reach base. But one mistake cost him two runs, when Paul Konerko crushed the 435th home run of his career — first of the season — to the U.S. Cellular Field leftfield bleachers.

5

The Diamondbacks improved to 5-3 on their current nine-game road trip with the win. And Reed has closed out all five victories on the trip, now boasting 11 saves on the season. Reed also threw first-pitch strikes to all five batters he faced.

11

The Diamondbacks are now 11-10 on the road this season and, with a win in the rubber match tomorrow, can return to Chase Field having won all three of their road trip series with a 6-3 record on the California and midwest jaunt.
