A welterweight matchup between two of the most exciting fighters on the planet has been added to the UFC’s annual summer FOX card.
On Tuesday, UFC President Dana White took to twitter to officially announce a fight between Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown will serve as the main event for UFC on FOX 12 in July. He also went on to reveal the winner would be next in line for a shot at the 170-pound belt.
Lawler, who is currently the number two-ranked welterweight according to the official Power MMA Rankings, is coming off a third round TKO victory over Jake Ellenberger at UFC 173. Prior to this victory the one known as ‘Ruthless’ dropped a narrow decision to Johny Hendricks at UFC 171 in a fight to decide the holder of vacant UFC welterweight title. He is now 4-1, with three knockouts, since making the drop from middleweight.
Brown, currently the number six-ranked welterweight, is coming off thrilling come-from-behind third-round knockout victory over Erick Silva in the main event of UFC Fight Night 40. Brown’s performance earned universal acclaim from both his peers and pundits, with some even declaring it an early favorite for Fight of the Year. This victory pushed “The Immortal’s” win streak to seven straight, with six of those wins coming by way of knockout.
UFC on FOX 12 is scheduled to take place July 26 as San Jose’s SAP Center. The main card is set to air on FOX following the televised preliminary card on FOX Sports 1 and digital preliminaries on UFC Fight Pass.
