The Arizona Cardinals’ wide receiving corps is as deep as it is talented.

With an exciting blend of veterans (Larry Fitzgerald and Ted Ginn, Jr.) and young talent (John Brown and Michael Floyd) making up the core of the group, the chance to crack the 53-man roster as a member of the unit might be a tall task for the likes of Brittan Golden, Jaron Brown and Walt Powell.

Yet all three were given one final shot to make their most convincing case Thursday night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

None, however, managed to put together a performance to remember.

Playing alongside third-string quarterback Logan Thomas, Golden, Brown and Powell combined to catch five passes for 28 yards.

On the evening, Brown was only targeted once. Powell caught one pass for 14 yards, while Golden snagged four short balls for 14 yards.

The latter’s best chance of the night came on 1st and 10 at the Arizona 20-yard line with a little more than 11 minutes to play in the contest. Unfortunately for Golden, Thomas missed him streaking down the field for what would have been the offense’s biggest gain of the night.

Asked what he thought of Powell, the team’s sixth-round pick out of Murray State, head coach Bruce Arians didn’t exactly reach into his bag of superlatives.

“Not as an offensive player,” Arians said when asked if Powell flashed in the 12-9 defeat. “He had a pretty good game on special teams. I thought he returned the ball well in that phase of it. He has a long ways to go as an offensive player.”

Powell returned five kickoffs for 140 total yards.

Former Arizona standout Dan Buckner, who was also thought to have been a candidate in the position competition at wide receiver, was targeted once, with the ball bouncing off his chest and into the hands of a defender for an interception.
