Former Arizona State RB Marion Grice shines for Chargers in preseason finale

The fourth game of the preseason schedule is nothing more than a glorified tune-up for all 32 NFL teams.

Starters rarely play. Game plans are kept simple. And more or less, it’s a time for young products and unproven talents to compete for a chance to make their respective team’s 53-man roster.

Former Arizona State running back Marion Grice certainly fits into the first category.

A sixth-round pick by the Chargers back in May, Grice had one final chance to prove his worth Thursday night — and boy did he ever make the most of it.

Grice, who was named to the Second-Team All-Pac-12 in 2013, was the game’s leading rusher — carrying the ball 17 times for 79 yards in San Diego’s 12-9 victory over the Arizona Cardinals at Qualcomm Stadium.

For the preseason, Grice finished with 167 yards rushing on 41 carries but failed to reach the end zone — something he did 39 times during his career in Tempe.
