Cahill, D-backs’ offense struggle in loss to Padres: By The Numbers

Trevor Cahill’s relapse Monday, on Labor Day, proved detrimental for an Arizona Diamondbacks offense which had to face San Diego Padres ace Tyson Ross.
The right-hander’s lack of control came back to bite his team, which couldn’t conjure much offense — and couldn’t get anything going in the bottom half of the order.
Cahill walked a season-high six, striking out five. He was pulled after just four innings of work, making way for a relief staff which would allow just three hits and two walks over the game’s final four innings.
Meanwhile, his offense was missing in action, leaving seven on base while going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Just one of the game’s 14 hits were for extra bases. That came off the bat of Jedd Gyorko, who doubled off of Cahill in the 5th.

Two D-backs hitters, Jake Lamb and Nolan Reimold, struck out four times apiece Monday.
Lamb, a rookie, now has a strikeout rate of 40 percent, having more than twice as many strikeouts (25) as he has hits (12). While a minor-leaguer in 2014, the third baseman’s strikeout rate was significantly lower — at 26 percent between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno.

After walking six Padres hitters Monday, Cahill’s walks-per-nine rate increased to a career-high 4.6 on the season. Cahill had twice before Monday walked six hitters in a game, while once walking seven.

Cahill’s effort Monday left him with an ERA over five once again, as it ballooned to 5.06 after he allowed three earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched. It was 4.98 when he entered Petco Park on Monday.

The D-backs went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, as Miguel Montero drove in the team’s only run. Montero was 2-for-4 Monday while seeing a team-low 12 pitches.

Center fielder Ender Inciarte stole his 14th base of the season Monday. He is third among National League rookies in the category, trailing Cincinnati Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton (54) and St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong (19).

The D-backs’ 6-9 hitters went 0-for-14 Monday with 11 strikeouts. The team’s 1-5 hitters were 6-for-19 with just two strikeouts.

Things could have been worse for Cahill and the D-backs, as the Padres went just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
