D-backs offensive explosion leads to victory: By the Numbers

Aug 5, 2015, 8:02 PM

Wednesday night was one of those games where everything went right for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The D-backs pounded out 17 hits in route to a 11-4 victory over the Washington Nationals, a win that guarantees the team a winning record on their current 10-game road trip.

Seven of the eight players in the D-backs line-up recorded at least one hit, with Aaron Hill being the only player not to do so, though he notched two RBI on the night.

In addition, five players recorded multiple hits with Ender Inciarte, A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt recording three apiece.

The biggest hit of the evening came from Welington Castillo, who mashed a 3-run back-breaking home run in the 8th inning to extend a 3 run lead to six. Castillo has now hit 11 home runs since being traded to the D-backs in June.

It wasn’t just the line-up that was dominant.

The pitching staff led by Rubby De La Rosa had an excellent night as well.

Despite allowing the first three batters of the game to reach base, De La Rosa settled down and recorded the win by going five strong innings, allowing only two hits. The bullpen pitched shutout baseball the final frame when the Nationals tacked on two runs.

Arizona improved to 44-19 when scoring four runs or more in a game, and is 6-3 on their current 10-game road trip that wraps up Thursday in Washington.

Here’s a look at the team’s victory, By the Numbers:

3

Number of consecutive wins from Rubby De La Rosa, tying a career- high (May 27- June 12, 2011).

19

The number of stolen bases from Paul Goldschmidt, which is a new single-season career-high for the first baseman. Goldschmidt swiped 18 bags during the 2012 season.

2

Number of earned runs given up this season in 14 road games (17.1 innings pitched) by Addison Reed.

6

Number of home runs by Welington Castillo in his last nine games. The D-backs catcher is now hitting .379 (11-for-29) with 9 RBI during his recent stretch.

129

Number of hits on the season by Paul Goldschmidt, which leads the National League. Goldy broke out of an 0-for-15 slump with three base hits and drew a walk on the night.

11

Number of stolen base attempts D-backs catchers have seen since June 27, third-fewest in Majors.

122

Number of hits on the season for A.J. Pollock, which leads the National League among outfielders.
