D-backs lose 4-1 to the Pirates after another late rally attempt: By the Numbers

The Pittsburgh Pirates only needed one inning to take control of Wednesday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
A three-run second inning was all that was necessary for the Pirates to win 4-1. A hit batter started the inning and a wild pitch on a strikeout scored that hit batter for the first run of the game.
The D-backs offense only had two hits in the first eight innings, but found their rhythm in the ninth inning. Both Ender Inciarte and Nick Ahmed led off the inning by reaching base. That was followed by an RBI single from Paul Goldschmidt to make it 4-1.
A second straight night of ninth inning rallies looked like it could be on the way. After that though, Pirates closer Mark Melancon struck out three straight for save number 38.
Robbie Ray threw for six innings and gave up seven hits. His 53 pitches in the first two innings had him fall behind early in the ballgame.
Zack Godley made his first appearance for the D-backs since his superb three start run at the end of July. He allowed one run in two innings of relief work.

Paul Goldschmidt entered Wednesday’s game hitting only .237 in the month of August. That would be his lowest monthly average since August of 2012 when he hit .232.

The D-backs won’t have much time to recover in the next couple of weeks, as their next day off isn’t until Sept. 3. That’s 15 days away from Wednesday’s game.
