Jadeveon Clowney a 49er?

May 5, 2014, 6:15 PM | Updated: 6:15 pm

Allow me a draft week musing, brothers. A sobering thought to ponder as we prepare for Thursday night.

If GM Trent Baalke so desired, the 49ers could acquire Jadeveon Clowney. Baalke has enough picks to make a deal with Houston.

The San Francisco 49ers are sitting in the catbird seat. They have one of the deepest rosters in the NFL, have had great success, and have six picks in the top 100 picks of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 49ers have the 30th pick overall in the draft, the 56th and 61st pick in the second-round, and the 77th, 94th and 100th pick in the third-round. Their last pick in the third-round, pick 100, is a compensatory pick so it cannot be involved in a trade. All of this adds up to some serious Clowney fodder if Baalke covets Clowney. The question becomes: at what cost?

The 49ers had a rock solid defense once again. All the major metrics across the board were top 10 except for one: sacks/attempt. San Francisco was 21st in sacks/attempt. Much of this can be explained by Aldon Smith missing five games and Justin Smith being busted up; but knowing how volatile the Aldon Smith situation is and the importance of edge rushers in the NFC West (i.e. Seattle), one has to believe an interest in acquiring a player the caliber of Clowney would be obvious.

San Francisco knows where its sourdough bread is buttered. What has made them a Super Bowl contender these last three years has been their dominance on the line of scrimmage, in the box, on both sides of the ball. And defense has been the beating heart of Jim Harbaugh’s bash you in the face mentality.

Although this scenario is unlikely to happen, it’s disconcerting to think San Francisco could get Clowney if they wanted him badly enough.

Tiger Woods is the Lord of the Headlines

Tiger Woods is still dominating headlines but the golf world has moved on. In terms of production, this is a man that hasn't been relevant in years but whatever he does cameras, microphones and interest follows him like TMZ on Travolta.

Adrian Peterson’s perdition

There's a ton of subterfuge swirling in and around the Adrian Peterson affair. Rumors and innuendo seem to be the currency used to build arguments as to where Minnesota's talented back is headed. So let me add to the speculation:

Good for Chris Borland. He made an immediate decision through a long-term lens and he seems to be at peace walking away from the game he loves and played so vigorously.

The threat of Los Angeles is a powerful one for the NFL

The NFL has always been a progressive sports league but what they have done with the L.A. market may be their masterpiece.

Recently, LeBron James tweeted something out that clearly referenced Kevin Love. He implored the social media populace to stop trying to "FIT-OUT" and start trying to "FIT-IN."
