MESA, Ariz. -- A wind-whipped storm has knocked down some power poles in east Mesa, leaving thousands without electricity.

Salt River Project officials said crews are working to restore power to about 5,000 of their customers Friday night.

A late-afternoon monsoon storm hit the Phoenix metropolitan area and there are scattered reports of street flooding and some downed trees in Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory until 6:30 p.m. Friday for areas in north-central Maricopa county and south-central Arizona.

Some parts of northwestern Maricopa County received up to 1 1/2 inches of rainfall by sundown.

Meteorologists said minor flooding is likely to occur in Morristown, Circle City, Wittman, the Carefree Highway and other rural roads from Peoria north to Lake Pleasant.
