As if the whole drama surrounding UFC 175 couldn’t get anymore absurd, Chael Sonnen has failed his random drug test and is now off the July 5 card, as first reported by ESPN.
According to the report, Sonnen was randomly tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following the UFC 175 On Sale press conference last month. Results from test showed the presence of two illegal substances: Anastrozole and clomiphene.
This comes just weeks after Sonnen’s original opponent, Wanderlei Silva, was pulled from the card after the Brazilian refused to take a random drug test by the NSAC.
Vitor Belfort is facing his own drug-testing drama as well after he revealed he too failed a random drug test last February. He is currently scheduled to appear at a NSAC licensing hearing on June 17.
This marks the second time Sonnen has failed a drug test, with the first coming after his fifth-round loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in 2010. The California State Athletic Commission originally suspended Sonnen for one year before reducing the sentence to six months following an appeal.
