Lost 80s at 4: Janet Jackson breaks through the charts

When Janet Jackson released her third album, Control, it became widely regarded as her breakthrough album. Enlisting the songwriting and producing team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, they crafted the "Janet Jackson sound" that would carry her through the next six multi-platinum albums.

The album produced five top 5 singles and grabbed four Grammy nominations with Jam and Lewis winning the Grammy for Producer of the Year.

Control was released on this date in 1986 with the lead single "What Have You Done for Me Lately."
