Arizona Sports' 2013 Year in Review: Top Moment of the Year

Relive 2013 with's most popular stories and blogs.
Best of 2013

Note: This is part of a series of posts you'll see over the next week or so on We had a panel of 16 voters, including all of our on-air personalities, cast votes in several categories like Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Best Moment of the Year and many others.

The calendar year of 2013 offered many great moments in Arizona Sports.

Former ASU star Phil Mickelson shot a first-round 60 on his way to winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open for the third time in his career.

The Arizona Rattlers defended their title by beating the Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Bowl, claiming the franchise's fourth championship.

The Arizona State Sun Devils and Arizona Cardinals each provided numerous memorable moments as both teams enjoyed stellar seasons.

But according to our Arizona Sports panel of voters, one moment shined brighter than all the rest in 2013.

The moment pictured above occurred October 3 at Arena in Glendale.

The Phoenix Coyotes were preparing for their 17th home opener in franchise history since relocating from Winnipeg in 1996. It was also a moment many thought would never happen.

In August, after four long years of relocation rumors, bankruptcy filings, legal wranglings and frustrating controversy, the National Hockey League finally sold the franchise to a group called IceArizona, headed up by George Gosbee and Anthony LeBlanc.

The NHL had controlled the team since 2009 when previous owner Jerry Moyes took the team into bankruptcy with a plan to sell to Blackberry founder Jim Balsillie, who would then move the team to Ontario.

That deal was thwarted by the NHL, and Balsillie's rejection led to a saga that would spread over the next four years.

So that singular moment in August, when the ink hit the paperwork between the league and IceArizona was voted by our panel as the single-best moment of 2013.

Here's how our panel voted:
