Warner: Cardinals would have to adjust to Peyton Manning

A healthy Peyton Manning is better than any quarterback currently on the Arizona Cardinals' roster.

Manning, who continues to be linked to Arizona should the Colts release him, would bring 54,828 yards passing, 399 touchdowns, a Super Bowl ring and a laser, rocket arm with him to the desert.

According to former Cards QB and current NFL Network Analyst Kurt Warner, though, that's not all he'd come with.

"One of the hardest things to do, for a quarterback, is to leave a system that you've been ingrained in your whole career and go to a different place," Warner told Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Monday. "I think we all like to say, ‘well, we'll just bring Peyton in and then we'll change everything and let him run his offense.'

"Well, it doesn't normally work that way, especially when you're talking about a whole coaching staff that they're not familiar with what Peyton likes to do."

Warner said it's important for a quarterback to find a system that he can work in, so just because a guy like Manning could be available doesn't mean he's a good fit for the Cardinals.

Arizona may have gotten a first-hand look at this kind of issue with Kevin Kolb last season, as he struggled to transition from Philadelphia's West-Coast scheme to Arizona's.

Does that mean Manning, for all his greatness, may actually be a bad fit with the Cardinals?

"I think that's going to be the key if Peyton does go somewhere," Warner said, "does he get into a system similar to what he was in or can he have enough input in that system and be able to change it to fit his skills because that's really what I tried to do when I came [to Arizona]."

One of the reasons Manning has been linked to Arizona is because of the success Warner had in the desert. His career thought to be all but over, Warner passed for 11,753 yards and 83 touchdowns in three years under Ken Whisenhunt, leading the Cardinals to a pair of division titles and one Super Bowl.

Like Warner, Manning, for all his greatness, would need time to get comfortable with the offense in Arizona - or anywhere that is not Indianapolis.

"It took me some time to be able to change everybody's focus and say, "OK, if we're going to play and be successful with my skills, we need to cater to this because this is what I'm good at, this is how I see the game,'" Warner said. "To the credit of these coaches here, they were willing to make those adjustments and allow me to have that input."

Of course, after having so much success with Warner it would make sense that the Cardinals would be intrigued by the possibility of acquiring Manning, even if the offense has to be adjusted in order to adapt to the future Hall of Famer's skill-set.

IS this all you have to write about right now. Seriously, isnt this concept a given, even with the average fan? Just in case the readers were wondering...in all team sports, winning organizations have players that adjust to every situation. If you're starting ILB goes down, the scheme and the assignments are altered. If the LT goes down, the offense does the same. Players get hurt all the time...Wins are heavily dependent upon how well the team adjusts.

Manning playing at the same level before his injury/surgery. I think the ball speed and distance may be softer. I was reading up on his injury and surgery. Its pretty serious you guys! Im surprised he didnt consider retiring. He will never be the same because of the artheritis. Now, the part where he'll come in and teach and coach up Skelton or Kolb... Thats the only advantage I see out of this. He's basically coming here to retire if he does come here. If he does, Skelton and/or Kolb need to get as much out of his as they can.

Not everyone realizes this. I see a lot of comments and statements where people think they can just plug someone like Manning in and wa-la, Super Bowl.

How wishy washy Warner is on his analysis of the whiz/cards system and kolb not fitting... well your telling me you changed thier minds to play to your skill and it was your Offense.. and you talk smack bout Kolb and how he doesnt fit the Whiz system. Why not come out for your botheren and say this staff needs to play to thier stengths

Manning has been to the Super Bowl twice in 14 years. He has one Super Bowl championship in all those years. Why does everyone think that if he comes here we will be instantly in the Super Bowl. Even if healthy he only has a few years left so what makes everyone think he will get us to a Super Bowl in those few years when he only did it twice in 14 years with the Colts. Peyton is one of the best QB's ever but for the Cardinals to bring him in would be a total mistake.

  • Wouldn't this be true of any QB???

...not really a stretch to think that adjustments would have to be made. What you would get from a guy like Manning is the cerebral aspect of the position. The ability to understand concepts and how to execute them. Heck, he could teach the coach's a thing or two.

will any cardinals quarterback ever be worthy of warner. very critical of the cardinals in many fashions. Even during the winning streak the negatives would be pointed out. just sayin...kinda odd

  • There's no coaching up that works with Whiz

I keep hearing what the 2nd commenter said "Now,the part where he'll come in and teach and coach up Skelton or Kolb...Thats the only advantage I see out of this." But we already saw how that went when Warner "taught/coached up" M. Leinart. Anyone who Manning might "teach/coach up" would get cut after Manning left. Because of Whizenhunt, oh my! Why does the offense/Whiz have to be so difficult? The Broncos adjusted, and Tebow went to the playoffs 1st year.

If the Cardinals see continuity in him for at least a year or two. He can teach Skelton and Kolb how to truly play the QB position as far as reads, ball placement, adjustments/audibles. And yes he can also teach Whiz a thing or two. It'd be a huge gamble but probably worth the 1-2 years to teach up Skelton or Kolb. I'm also down for Skelton and Kolb battling it out in camp too. I think the positives outweigh the negatives acquiring Manning. And as far as developing Skelton or Kolb it will pay dividends obviously not short term but in the long run

It's funny how Warner and everyone else always states how hard it is for a quarterback to leave a system that you've been ingrained in your whole career and go to a different place. (ISN'T THIS WHAT KOLB DID?.... WITHOUT AN OFF-SEASON, MINI-CAMPS OR EVEN TIME TO LEARN THE PLAY BOOK?)And now everyone thinks Kolb's no good....... What a bunch of wishy-washy Analysts. If it took time for Warner or even Manning to get comfortable with a new offense why wouldn't it take time for Kolb?........ What a bunch of CRAP.
