Another day, and there's more talk about the possibility of Peyton Manning wearing Arizona Cardinals' red in 2012.

However, Tuesday ESPN NFL insider John Clayton appeared on ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike (mornings 5 to 9 a.m. on Arizona Sports 620) and went "against the grain" and doubted whether the Manning-Arizona marriage will ever happen.

"I still don't think Bill Bidwill is going to pay two years for two quarterbacks because he already paid last year for Kevin Kolb," Clayton said.

Of course, the Cardinals traded cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round draft pick to Philadelphia for Kolb, and then rewarded their new signal caller with a 5-year, $63 million contract -- of which $21 million is guaranteed.

Kolb is also due a $7 million roster bonus by St. Patrick's Day.

In fact, Clayton didn't even include the Cardinals in the list of suitors for Manning. "He already knows the principals that will be involved," he said. "He knows that Washington, Miami, maybe the New York Jets, possibly Seattle -- those will be the teams that are going to be out there making the phone calls."

Clayton's thinking is in direct contrast with handicappers who have installed Arizona as the favorite among possible new destinations for Manning.

In other Manning to Arizona news, Cardinals' Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald refuted rumors of his alleged dinner with the quarterback. Fitzgerald, while making a promotional appearance at a Valley cell phone store, said he hasn't spoken to Manning since the 2011 Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

I for one will be shocked if AZ goes after Manning. In my eyes, we are pretty much in the same boat as SF. The Niners seem committed to Alex Smith as their signal caller with Kaepernick developing behind the scenes. For the Cards, I would say we are pretty committed to developing with Kolb, and grooming Skelton behind the scenes. This realistically isnt a team that has to win today - there is a lot of young talent that we can build around (especially on defense) to be a contender for years to come

  • "Guaranteed" isn't guaranteed

They use a very loose definition of the term "guaranteed" these days to include roster bonuses and such. It would really surprise me if Kolb's $7 mil roster bonus this year wasn't part of that $21 mil "guaranteed", so if they cut him they'd be out at most $14 mil, and possibly even less than that.

  • Even if Manning wasn't part of the equation..

...the question remains do the Cards want to pay the BIG bonus for a guy that was only marginally better than Skelton and may not be durable enough to start 16 games? Skelton signed a 4 year $2M rookie contract with $180 bonus included...he is due $490k this year. Kolb is due $7M bonus + $1M this year...if they don't think he is the guy...now is the time to cut the cord. They will only be out the $10M from last year.

Good thing the ESPN resident computer nerd doesn't know anything about sports. How did the king of the geek squad get a job like that anyways? I'm guessing he gave up his lunch money like all the other booger eaters did in grade school.

JC you are behind in the news compared to Lombardi, Shefter, Mort, & LaCanforia! Each of those guys have the Red Birds being in the hunt! I'll dismiss this claim!
