ESPN insider: Money could be sticking point with Cardinals, Manning

Money tends to play an important role with deals, trades and contract offers. But if money isn't the driving force for Peyton Manning if he is released from the Colts, it could make it easier for the Cardinals to go after him.

ESPN NFL insider John Clayton told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf that Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill would not pay for two quarterbacks in two years.

"They were not cheap in anything they did in last offseason," Clayton said. "They put a lot of money out in free agency; they put a lot of money out in the Kevin Kolb trade. I just don't know if they're ready to say goodbye to Kevin Kolb in one year."

Clayton said that it is very likely the Indianapolis Colts will release Manning because the organization is heading in a new direction. However, no matter how enticing it would be for a MVP quarterback to be able to throw to Larry Fitzgerald, the Cardinals would have to either give up Kolb, or spend more money to keep both.

The Cards traded cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round draft pick for Kolb last summer, and then signed him to a five-year, $64 million contract with $21 million guaranteed.

Kolb threw 1,955 yards averaging 7.73 yards per pass attempt in 2011. He had nine passing touchdowns, but fumbled seven times and threw eight interceptions.

Kolb, 27, would be difficult to give up, which could leave the franchise placing their hope in the recuperating Manning.

Clayton also emphasized that it's not a matter of being cheap, but managing resources and working with Kolb.

"Seeing how the Bidwills have run that franchise, I would think they‘d say, ‘No. You wanted Kolb; you get Kolb and make the best out of it," Clayton said.

But Manning has played in a dome his entire professional career, and Arizona is the only one of the teams interested in him that offers a closed roof.

According to Clayton, Manning may be willing to take a smaller salary with the Cardinals than with any other team because of the option of a controlled climate.

Brett Favre with Aaron Rodgers backing him up. Joe Montana with Steve Young backing him up. I cahallenge MBidwell to make that next step as a Franchise Brand. Peyton Manning with Kevin Kolb backing him up. Why give up on a 27yo (Kolb) to get Peyton (34). Peyton has said he will take a little less to get the right situation. Just make it a win-win and keep it safe by keeping Kolb behind Peyton.

  • i dont think kolb is that good

To keep around and pay a 7 mil bonus. He has always had a problem staying healthy. He lost his job to mike Vick who is a pro bowl qb... But he's not as good as he should be spending 5 yrs in the NFL before traded here. In the end, the final decision to keep Kolb and pay him a 7 mil bonus is up to Bidwill. If they want to see him improve they need to get him a line and better weapons at reciever..

Do not pass up the chance to have one of the greatest to ever play QB on this team. Solid Def, Solid WR options and of course Fitz. Make the move now and let him win us a division. Kolb is garbage not to mention concussion prone, and the only thing I can say positive about him is his signing allowed us to resign Fitz long term, so Thank you Kevin and good luck somewhere else!

They play the Patriots, Packers, Jets, Lions, Eagles, Falcons - not counting the 49ers (twice) and you talk about a brutal schedule. If Peyton can play, you have the Cardinals all of the sudden becoming the center of the NFL universe. That would equal increased revenue streams and brand empowerment. They need bet the house and go all in because either way - it could be a rough season with that schedule.

  • Clayton is full of it

He doesn't know and neither does Shefter. Kolb was the best choice last year and now Peyton could be the best choice this year. Kolb has no pocket presence- let Skelton be the backup if Peyton's healthy.

  • Kolb? ur kidding...

Honestly never thought Kolb has potential to be a great QB. How many games did he play?? Matt Flynn most likely will be another example of FA QB busts. John Clayton has been losing it for some time.... being mouthpieces of wrong info. John Skelton came much cheaper and can be a great backup to Peyton and learn from him whenever #18 call it quit.... that would be the "smart" thing to do. Skelton easily outplays Kolb if given the chance.

  • Get Peyton!!!

I think that the Arizona Cardinals should get peton manning. He seem's to be healty to why not get him. Even if he is not so healty, he would be a great trade offer to get some else that we could use. Let's face it the Cardinals need him or else it would be a repeat just like last season. 8-8 is good, but we have to much talent then that. We could be 12-4 if we get peyton manning. So bottom line GET PEYTON MANNING!!!
