Levi Brown has been a target of criticism from analysts and fans alike since being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

The Cardinals are certain to release Brown, unwilling to pay the large amount of money that is due to him this season, but are hoping to bring him back.

"I think Levi's been in a tough position ever since he was taken with the fifth pick of the draft," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Whisenhunt talked about the fact that a lineman will have some rough plays, but a team that throws the ball as often as the Cardinals do will leave a tackle like Brown more opportunities to slip up.

"With all that being said, I think over the last half of our season this past year, when we needed it the most, Levi played probably his best football," Whisenhunt added. "He was consistent, it was something that was important to our team and hopefully that was a point where he's starting to get it from that standpoint."

If Brown is starting to "get it," now would be a bad time for the Cardinals to let him go. Given the amount of money they've paid him and time they've spent coaching him, seeing him turn into the player they thought he'd be for another team would be as unsightly as watching him try to protect a QB earlier in the season.

Which is why the goal is to bring Brown back for next season and beyond.

"We would love to have Levi back, and those discussions with his agent are ongoing," Cardinals GM Rod Graves said, noting that the intensity of the discussions should pick up over the next few days. "Obviously our objective is to try to get a deal in place for him, to have him with us for an extended period."

And, though Graves said part of Brown's strength is his ability to play both right and left tackle, the plan is for Levi to keep protecting the QB's blind side.

"Right now he's our left tackle, and until we get a better one he'll remain there," he said.

    Good at look out blocks!
Levi Brown is good at one thing and one thing only saying look out to the quarterback. This guy couldn't block me in a phone booth and the Cardinals want to bring him back. No, Peyton Manning for you!

    do the right thing
why dont the cardinals just do the right thing. resign the man and then move him into the guard position where he could be a very descent above average player in the nfl. you know the same thing the cowboys did to the last tackle who couldnt make it for us and then did a very good job as a guard.

    Interesting
It's interesting to see the wide gap in opinions on Levi from fans to the coaching staff. I have to wonder what the coaching staff is seeing and we aren't? The key quote is probably the last line, where he says "...until we get a better one...".

    Just one flaw
Moving levi to guard might sound like a good idea in theory, but theres on glaring flaw with that plan... we have no quality tackle to take his place. As a left tackle he may be only C grade, but our replacement choices are all C- or worse. What we need is a better tackle so we can move him anywhere, be it guard or just over to right tackle. I'd like to see them resign him, but only at a price thats reasonable for the mediocre skill he possesses, if he's demanding top dollar I'd rather see him walk then take a chance that he's finally turned the corner just as his contracts expiring.

    Don't do it
Hopefully Levi will only look at new teams to get a fresh start and not give these boneheads a chance to screw this up. Whizndunce already blew the coaching situation bringing Grimm back so we can count on noone getting coached up once they get here. Maybe they've got their eggs in the Peyton basket thinking his quick release will mask their horrendous line?

Good point grimmy01. I think when fans get angry they get a little "blood thirsty," so to speak, and they want to see some heads roll, but if there is no one better to step up then you are shooting yourself in the foot.

    Not a bad idea.
No prob with Brown as OG, given they fill LT with a well above average FA and possibly draft the starting RT. That said, Cordy Glenn might be an interesting first round pick. They may be able to trade down (get the xtra 2nd rndr +) and pick him up in the low 20s. Then, if Glenn cant handle the RT spot, switch with Brown...That is 700 pounds of human on the right side, both capable run blockers...not bad at all...

    If you can land
one or more of the talented tackels that will be free agents this year like Demetrius Bell with Buffalo or Jared Gaither with the Chargers and then bring in the stud tackel from Stanford you could have a top ranked O-Line.
