As Kevin Kolb and John Skelton continue to battle it out this preseason for the starting quarterback duties for the Arizona Cardinals, one ESPN football analyst believes Skelton has the edge.

Brock Huard with 710 ESPN in Seattle told Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Friday the Cardinals pursuit of Peyton Manning's services proved the team's willingness to change directions at the quarterback position, no matter how costly.

"Arizona clearly showed they'd be willing to eat a lot of Kevin Kolb money and pay Peyton Manning on top of it," Huard told Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Friday.

In Arizona, Kolb was deemed the frontrunner to win the quarterback job. Still, he's been unable to prove to this point he can stay on the field and be a productive and reliable leader of this Cardinals offense.

As Kolb has sputtered, Skelton continues to open eyes and minds to the proposition of him taking over as the team's starter permanently.

"[The Cardinals] gave Kevin Kolb a boatload of money and yet John Skelton has seemingly outplayed him at every turn," Huard said.

While Kolb has his fair share of doubters, it is far too early in this quarterback competition to crown the winner. But, the door is open for Skelton to end the discussion -- that is, if he can prove himself once and for all.

"It's going to be which of these quarterbacks can take the next step," Huard explained. "Can John Skelton do it? Can John Skelton, who flashes some very good talent, do it consistently?"

    Neither Kolb or Skelton has outplayed Lindley come gametime. Typical Kolb gets hurt, Skelton unimpressive with little yardage, 50% accuracy and a pick to boot. Lindley should be in the mix for the starting position, he's the only one acting like a real QB during the games. Kolb and Skelton have yet to stretch the field, they got the best receiver on the planet and they can only get him the ball once. I'm tired of this QB act, give it to Lindley

    you guys would have learned something from Max Hall. Pushing Lindley to be the starter is just laughable. You cannot be serious?

    i agree with CroDawg, though i disagree with the max Hall comparisons. I like Lindley a lot. but we have to remember that he is playing against 3rd and 4th string guys, though he did get some time against some 2nd string players in this game. I'd like to see how he plays against better compitition. But i dont think the Cards are gonna push him to hard yet. Lindley has a much bigger upside then Hall did.hes bigger, more athletic and has a better arm

    So tennisgrandpa apparently likes to put all his stock into one game. One preseason game. The first preseason game. Ryan Lindley will be good - someday. He outplayed Skelton and Kolb last week - one game. It was his FIRST NFL game EVER. CroDawg has it right, you'd think they'd learn from the Max Hall situation. Lindley will get his day - not in 2012. Kolb actually played a little better than Skelton last night in KC. The competition continues.

    On tennisgrandpa. I agree with crodawg and Scott. To be honest, all 3 of them, have shown flashes but haven't played consistant. All 3 have picks. The only one that hasn't had a TD drive is Kolb. But to all QBs credit, the whole team sucked last night. The D couldn't stop the run or pass. Maybe they're not playing balls out cuz its preseason? Idk... The 1st o line couldn't make holes. Maybe cuz smiths vision isn't as good as wells or williams? The QBs are throwing more ints and incompletions than tds. Maybe its the protection or WRs? They got 3 weeks to make adjustments.

    is not even a real comparison. Max Hall lacked size and arm strength, but had good leadership. He looked good against a 4th string defense in preseason. Lindley looked good against a 2nd string defense and has the size and arm strength. I think Skelton should be the starter out of all 3, but maybe Peter King from SI was not far fetched when he projected Lindley would start some time this season.

    to let lindley get a crack at playing with the 1's in a preseason game. because it would be sending a msg to the nfl, that the cards, dont believe in skelton or kolb. which, may be true! but lindley starting may strike a big contraversy, of which, the cards cant afford to have right now, considering the fact, they are trying to water out the Kolb-Skelton fire. The players would take sides: kolb-skelton-or lindley. They'd lose confidence in whiz. Although starting lindley isnt a bad idea, just to see what he has to offer with the 1's.

    but the damage it would do in the locker room, to the players, and to the team. Whiz and his staff would be basically admitting that they aren't sure of Skelton or Kolb. They are going to look stupid! Ppl were already questioning, prior to the trade, why they traded a pro bowl CB for a unproven QB who had so much potential and experience, but is still struggling. They thot highly of Skelton, but he seems to struggle too. Its a hot mess right now! But its only 2 weeks into 5 weeks of preseason. It will work itself out. Its sad to see Whiz struggle getting his qb :(

    The Max Hall comparison is not meant to say Lindley will perform miserably like Hall during an actual regular season start. But people have to remember that Hall performed great during the preseason games he was in (against 3rd and 4th string guys), just like Lindley has done. If Lindley actually plays this season, the Cards are in real trouble.

    it is obvious that if the Cards do well this season, it will be in spite of whoever is playing QB, not because of them - much like the Niners did last year. If Kolb doesn't take the starting position with his play, he will be gone by next year and if Skelton winds up starting, he needs to show significant improvement for this franchise to even begin to consider that he is their future. Right now though, it is just a big mess.
