As John Skelton and Kevin Kolb continue to battle for the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback job, every game carries a little more weight.

Unfortunately, both signal callers struggled in the Cardinals' 27-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Friday.

Skelton started the game for Arizona, but couldn't generate much offense in his three possessions.

The 24-year-old was 3-of-6 passing for 35 yards with no touchdowns, one interception and a sack.

Kolb replaced Skelton early in the second quarter and got to play with most of the Cardinals' first-team offense, with the exception of franchise star wideout Larry Fitzgerald.

The 27-year-old was 1-of-5 passing for 21 yards with no touchdowns and one sack against the Chiefs. Kolb saw four of his five pass attempts fall incomplete before he exited the game late in the first half.

With neither Kolb nor Skelton performing at a high level in Friday's defeat, the Cardinals' quarterback competition appears as wide open as ever.

    Running Backs
I wouldn't say Skelton struggled. He made one bad throw; the others were just fine. Once Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams begin their preseason we will be able to gauge the quarterback play. Until then (because of no viable RB) anything they do should have an asterisk by it. Curb your pessimism.

Floyd looked like a stiff with no fluidity
Byrd looked way better. Starting QB's have so many weapons and use none of them. Lindley won't be a contender for starter but he should be getting reps with the 1st unit based on play. Our D-line looked horrible; KC RB's probably averaged 5yd/carry. Powell looks like a better back than ASmith. Why was MAdams our starting CB?

I really didn't c ne holes open up tho. The o line needs 2 run block more consistantly. Come on guys! I loved the way Powell was hitting the holes. They weren't big either, but, he found some. what would he looks like against the 1's? The D was awful. Agreed. What was Adams starting 4? Gay gave up some big plays (like he did in Pitt). The d line & all the LBs were getting over powered by KCs offensive front. That was sad 2 c compared 2 how they played last year. They stayed in gainst KCs 2's & made a stop. But if it were their 1's they would have been embarrased.

Mike Adams was starting because it's preseason and it's when you evaluate talent. Agree that Byrd has looked incredible this preseason. Probably the most exciting part of preseason thus far. I've been really impressed with Lindley up to this point.

    Another poor article.
I agree with the responders. This is another typical KTAR writer, looking at stats and not looking at the game itself. With Skelton in, the run game hampered several drives. With Kolb, both timing and line play... until Kolbs last drive when he resorted to having happy feet. Skelton a B-, Kolb a C.

    Lindley Nation
I'm tired of the whole Kolb/Skelton act, neither one has stepped up and played the way we need them to. Kolb getting hurt while running for his life and skelton completing 50% of his short passes but still makes horrible decisions is not the future for this team. Lindley has outplayed every QB we got. The argument is that he's going up against 2nd and 3rd string players. Stick him behind the starting O-line and let him throw to Fitz and lets see what we get. My money is on Lindley to lead this team. Lindley is the only one that has the stones to stretch the field.

    when is the last time
The cardinals have went into preseason knowing who the QB would be? Is Jeff Blake/dennis green combo the last time we knew who the QB would be? Even when Kurt was here there was the Leinart factor. This honestly is nothing new to cardinals fans....at all. No matter how much speculation or breakdown of the two it probably wont be decided until an hour before the seahawks. Given the love they had for Kolb to get him and lack of faith in skelton, which caused this whole dibacle...Kolb will get the nod.

    Nothing to Report
It's pre-season football so there really isn't much you can do with this kind of information. What the Cardinals should just do is try to get enough reps for both, and go into the regular season with Kolb, the supposed QB of the future, and see what he can do as a healthy QB in games that really matter. Skelton has shown to be a very desirable back-up thus far.
