As John Skelton and Kevin Kolb continue to battle for the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback job, every game carries a little more weight.

Unfortunately, both signal callers struggled in the Cardinals' 27-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Friday.

Skelton started the game for Arizona, but couldn't generate much offense in his three possessions.

The 24-year-old was 3-of-6 passing for 35 yards with no touchdowns, one interception and a sack.

Kolb replaced Skelton early in the second quarter and got to play with most of the Cardinals' first-team offense, with the exception of franchise star wideout Larry Fitzgerald.

The 27-year-old was 1-of-5 passing for 21 yards with no touchdowns and one sack against the Chiefs. Kolb saw four of his five pass attempts fall incomplete before he exited the game late in the first half.

With neither Kolb nor Skelton performing at a high level in Friday's defeat, the Cardinals' quarterback competition appears as wide open as ever.

Why only 6 pass attempts per QB in preseason?????
Frustrated Cards fan here. I LOVE how Pete Carrol is running the QB show in preseason and hate how Whiz runs it here in AZ. Seattle has two QB's who split all the throws in their first preseason game, AWESOME, that means you can actually see how they perform and they can get in a rhythm. We have two QB's fighting for the spot here in AZ and our coach gives them each 6 attempts per game? When QB's are not proven they need to play a ton in preseason (weather it is with first team or not). Dumb to try to save them from injury when we don't yet know if they are worth saving from injury.

    Grimm Sucks
Why are we giving Russ Grimm a hall pass, seems we’ve never fielded a NFL quality line? Doesn’t matter who’s behind center if they consistently running for their life! Clearly this team lacks talent at the QB position, yet nearly every team in this league manages to coach up the line play. This team not competing for the division, 1st team can’t move the ball against 2nd string D. I would cut Kolb start the rookie and initiate the re-building process. This team was a field goal or less away from a 3-13 record last season and looks no better thus far in preseason!

    It's early..
...but it's really ugly considering this is AZ's second preseason game. Defense can't stop anyone, Offense can't move the chains. I think we need to lower expectations if the trend continues.
