Cardinals linebacker Sam Acho knows the team has not run its normal defense during the preseason.

As is customary, Ray Horton has left out the blitzes and pressure-schemes in favor of simple, basic stuff.

With that -- and perhaps because of it -- the Cardinals have not done too well, being run over seemingly at will by both the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.

But Acho, a second-year pro out of Texas who is penciled in to start at one of the team's outside linebacker spots, says the play-calling is no excuse for the struggles.

"Even if you keep it basic, we expect we can run one play and cover anybody," he told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Tuesday.

That's why it is a little concerning that the group has looked so bad, though it is worth remembering what you see now is not what you'll get when the regular season starts -- at least in terms of playcalling.

listen Listen: Sam Acho, Cardinals linebacker
Cardinals linebacker Sam Acho stopped by to talk about the defense's struggles as well as his progress.
"It's not what we always do, but at the same time it doesn't matter what the coach calls," Acho said. "We want to get to a point where it doesn't matter what the coach calls -- whether he's blitzing all game or didn't call one blitz -- we're going to stop the other team."

Acho admitted part of the reason the defense isn't at that point is because of everyone being a little overconfident and comfortable -- himself included.

"I think a lot of us felt, 'hey we'll be good, we did it last year, 7-2,'" he said. "Well now I'm glad it happened early, we're seeing we can't just rely on what happened last year.

"It's a new year."

Acho said he's glad these issues came up early because now there is time to improve.

    "vanilla defense"
is a load of crap. i agree you dont want to show your full package in the preseason. but from everything i have seen, then it takes a few weeks into the regular season for everyone to get used to the packages in game scenarios and we have to wait for the D to get jump started.

He's right in every thing that he said. Can't get compfy and rely on last year. Why? "It's a new year".

    Plain Vanilla
Oh so NO and KC were running their mid-season schemes, they werent plain vanilla-ing it down our throat? Get real. No team looks as disorganized and unprepared as the Cardinals. They should be big time embarassed. What year will Grimm be able to coach the O-line to a minimally effective level? As a coach he was a great player--it's not working people! I guess its all just playing possum and come September 9th they'll just turn it on and be great. PT Barnum was right, thre's one born everyday... #suckers

"No team looks as disorganized and unprepared as the Cardinals." I think the Raiders and Cowboys would have something to say about that.

    Not concerned
Coach Wiz said in his press conference that they aren't even scheming or game planning - they are just talent evaluating at this point in the pre-season. We saw what this defensive unit did last year and the roster hasn't changed aside from our CBs. Not worried
