The Arizona Cardinals are off to their best start in franchise history since 1974.

Their defense has stifled opposing offenses led by the likes of Tom Brady and Michael Vick, to the tune of the second best points per game (13.3) average in the league.

Kevin Kolb, their once-beleaguered quarterback, is showing signs of the player they traded for and signed to a five-year, 21 million dollar extension back in July 2011.

And most importantly heading into Week 4, they sit alone a top the NFC West -- a division that is clearly on the rise in 2012.

Still, ESPN senior football analyst John Clayton isn't completely sold the Cardinals are the team to beat out west.

"In the NFC West, the eye test still says it's San Francisco," Clayton said Arizona Sports 620's Doug & Wolf. "Even though they lost at Minnesota and played poorly. The record obviously goes with Arizona."

While Clayton wasn't quite ready anoint the Cardinals as one of the NFC's elite teams just yet, he didn't shy away from making a bold prediction about their upcoming slate of games.

"Just when I look at the schedule in the next four weeks, how out of line is it to say that the Cardinals could be 7-0 or 6-1?" said Clayton. "I think it's very viable. The defense keeps them in every game.

"But I think the significant change overall is how good the defenses are in the division. They are all sensational."

John Clayton gives the low down on how the NFL Owners and Referees reached the agreements. Who caved more, the Refs or the Owners? Plus, John talks about the exciting game tonight between the Browns and the Ravens.

The Cardinals play host this weekend to the 1-2 Miami Dolphins, and then travel to St. Louis to face the Rams on Thursday night.

If the Cardinals are to prove their mettle in the division, they'll have to wait until Week 8 to do so, when they welcome the reigning NFC West champion 49ers to town for a Monday Night Football showdown on Oct. 29.

    Clayton's opinion
This is a guy that had the Cardinals ranked in the high 20's at the beginning of the season, so I wouldn't put too much stock in his opinion of their talent.

I'm sure John Clayton isn't the only one to have the Cards ranked in the 20's before the season started.

Clayton is the voice of reason
JC calmly told us in the Valley how Max Hall is not a NFL QB. We got all upset but his reasoning was spot on. Him having the Cards rated low in the beginning of the season is no different from any other talking head. Be honest, we all felt the same way. What he is saying now is also spot on! The dude is not The Oracle but he knows of what he speaks.

    Agree
I agree that Clayton is a pretty credible "insider", and also tend to agree with his opinion. When we play the niners, we will have a chance to show if we are truly the cream of the crop or if they still can edge us out. Until then, we are comparing apples to oranges.

    Be Honest Cards Fans,
Most of you also had them ranked in the twenties before this season started. Remember, they are two plays from being 1-2 right now instead of 3-0...Anything is possible with this type of defense, the problem is that it takes a toll for one side of the ball to do most of the work. Clayton is correct in his assessment, but it will have to play out and the 49ers will have to prove it on the field.

The story of this season so far is
not really the defense. We knew they would be good. The story is how are the OT's doing what they're doing? Did Grimm all of a sudden become competent? Was Massey the steal of the century? Are they going to get exposed soon and turn Kolb back into the goat?

"Guy (John Clayton) looks like he never played a down of football in his life." Again with this ridiculously stupid idea that unless you have played the game, any analysis you give is somehow wrong, or less knowledgeable than someone who has. Clayton has spent DECADES covering the NFL, and his opinion is so respected that he was elected -by his peers, which included those who actually have played the game - as the President of the Pro Football Writers Association. Disagree withe man? Fine. But please quit with the stupidity.

    All of those responding
Note that I did not say "twenties", I said "high twenties", as in 27-29 range. That's not nearly the same as 20-22 range, where most picked them and most fans before the season would probably agree with. Only other person I saw that had them rated that poorly was Bill Simmons, who predicted them to go 1-15. Clayton's been very hit-or-miss lately in his analysis. I don't have the respect for his NFL perspective that I used to have, I think he tends to get swept up in the "trendy" things going on too frequently.
