You could argue that nobody is as dialed in to what happens in the NFL more than Peter King of Sports Illustrated.

Every week King issues his Monday Morning Quarterback column which is, quite simply, a must read for NFL fans everywhere.

But in the course of reading his 8,500-word epic, maybe missed the fact that King has listed his "top ten NFL assistants who will get sniffs for head coaching jobs in the league next year."

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton showed up on the list -- at number eight.

It's somewhat surprising that Horton is that low on the list. The St. Louis Rams interviewed Horton last offseason for their vacant head coaching job before choosing Jeff Fisher for the post.

And despite Arizona's current seven-game losing streak, Horton's defense has been the strong point of the team, ranking seventh in the league in yardage allowed and 11th in points allowed.

Interestingly, another familiar name appears on the list ahead of Horton. Former ASU head coach Dirk Koetter, now the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, appears at number five.

Making Horton HC wont make a difference. My point is to keep him from going somewhere else so that his mind and input in the defense stays here in AZ. If they keep Whiz hes gna keep on passing the ball. Whiz wants to install a pass heavy offense but doesnt have the QB to do it (Kolb always injured, Lindley a project, Skelton sucks). He hasnt realized Wells isnt a starting RB (doesnt have the burst, moves, or catching ability). He didnt stick with LSH & the run game. Hes doesnt make good football decisions and needs to go. What good will it do letting Horton go mesa mad man?

When you mention "proven winner" and Whisenhunt in the same sentence YOU NEED TO INCLUDE Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger at the beggining of it(Kurt won a SB in STL and Ben with Tomlin after Whiz left). Given a SB winning QB, ANYBODY can win a championship Chuck H. Proven winners dont go on 6+ losing streaks. Proven winners find a way to win NOT a way to lose.

I endorse Ray Horton for HC of AZ Cardinals
And if he agrees to stay in his DC role with more money, great! Lets roll with that! But if he's offered a HC gig, with the success he's had with this defense, why would you let him leave? Why wouldnt you make him HC here to keep his defensive mind here? Currently, the Cards are ranked 7 in total defense. You know that its going to hurt this team if Horton leaves. It isn't gna hurt this team if Whiz leaves because they're the worst in all offensive categories in football. I say do what you have to do to keep Horton PERIOD and UPGRADE all the offensive coaching staff.

Whiz was a proven winner when Todd Haley ran the offense and he had a QB named Kurt Warner calling the plays at the line. The Whiz can no longer hang his hat on that and has proceeded to lose 6+ consecutive games "and counting" over the last three years. This team just made history by being the FIRST team ever to go 4-0 and then lose 7 straight! Not something to be proud of. But, if your gonna do your job bad you might as well be the best at it!

Whiz Officially Will Never Climb Over.500
Ala every other Arizona Cardinals Coach in it's history. Fact of the matter is The Bidwells opened the pocket books on the Quarterback situation including paying Kurt 13 Million his final season and Whiz and every head with a voice has missed terribly. Bringing in Derek Anderson set this Franchise back at least 3 Seasons. Their is just no excuse to have the same problems year in year out ESP with all these young Stud Quarterbacks in the League as well as The Bidwells Willingness to splurg on a QB

@Fitz, no surprise I disagree with you. I disagree with you on just about everything. First, Horton hasn't made this defense "championship caliber" or else we wouldn't have lost the last 7 games. The D has been exploited this year (250+ yards to Brian Hartline?) I don't mind people calling for Whiz's job, but ask yourself if the replacement is better. My opinion is that Whiz is one of the top 10 coaches in the league, best in our franchise's history, and the man for the job. We have had a rotating door of QB's and you need a franchise QB to win.

But when we DID have a franchise QB, Whiz took us to the Superbowl. Those things don't happen every year. The fans here are bandwagon fans and spoiled. And we actually do have a running game, despite our terrible line. Before Whiz, name me a running back we had that hit a 100 yards. It was non-existent. We should have fired Miller for Haley and fired Grimm a long time ago. But make no mistake - Whiz is the best head coach we've ever had and the man for the job.

This is a bad team with inconsistent play. Both our starting running backs and QB's were lost to injury. There aren't better coaches out there, and if we fire Whiz, he'll be scooped up in 2 days. We need a better O-Line, an elite pass rusher or a QB - although I'd like to see what Kolb can do with a better line. Patience is a virtue - I know it's the NFL and it's "what have you done for me lately?" - but a kneejerk reaction is the last thing this organization needs. Whiz taking us to the Super Bowl had better give him another year to get this mess straightened out.

I never said that we couldnt run the ball, I said that Whiz doesnt stick to the run. Im not confident Whiz can turn things around even if he's given another year. The bottom line is that we need a reliable good-elite QB. There wont be any good-elite QBs worth getting in FA next year. Romo? Vick? No thank you. Maybe in the draft but chances are we'll be too far back AND Im not confident in Graves at all. I dont think he can move us up to get that QB we need. Maybe. Maybe not. He hasnt displayed that ability yet.

I just looked at the stats on nfl.com and we're #7 total defense (as of right now) and #30 total offense. As far as which coach is doing a better job with their unit, Horton with the D, and Whiz with the O, the #'s speak for themselves bro. It WOULD be nice for our D to score TDs for our offense because our offense cant score TDs themselves, but, THATS NOT THEIR JOB. Their job is to defend and they've done a very good job at it. I give you a pass on Whiz not having a good QB right now AND if he did he could probably win us a Superbowl. But honestly, anybody can win a SB w/ a gud QB.
