Perhaps Ken Whisenhunt's tenure in Arizona is not coming to an end after all.

While many a report state the franchise is likely to part with its coach of the last six seasons, Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole believes Whisenhunt will survive his second losing season in three years.

Word around the league is that Detroit's Jim Schwartz, the Arizona Cardinals' Ken Whisenhunt and Chicago's Lovie Smith are all expected to survive for another season. That expectation is based largely on the conservative approach that all three teams have historically taken with firing coaches, particularly when those coaches have money still owed to them.

It's interesting that Cole is not saying the Cardinals will keep Whisenhunt around because they think he is the best option, but instead because the franchise would be reluctant to part with a coach when there is still time left on his contract.

However, we have been led to believe these are not the "same old Cardinals" that we knew back in the day, and if that is the case then it may not prevent the Cardinals from making a move after all.

    wrong Headline
The headline should have said "Opinion, Whiz to stay in AZ". Not Report. Opinions are like you know what. Everyone has one.

    Totally agree
on Report vs. Opinion. If this team keeps Whiz because of the $5.5M that's owed to him, I will not watch them next year. He has no clue on offense and Horton will leave. This mess is completely his fault. I have no confidence in him finally getting it and addressing the line first. He would draft Barkley in the first and a running back in the second and maybe address OT in the 3rd.

    Not convinced...
dumping Whiz is the right move. Not convinced keeping him is either. I'm on the fence. Great players make a great coach. But on the flip side I'm sure he's had a great say in the players we currently have (read QB's). Promoting Horten to HC is a gamble. Like I said, players make coaches look real good. Zero guarantee RH makes the offense work....ZERO. In fact the odds are greatly stacked against him with this OL and QB situation. Might he make better choices in the future? Who knows.

Look at all the great coaches in the NFL, they almost all have good/great QBs. And if Whiz gets the blame for QB, does he get the credit for Peterson, Washington, Rhodes, Campbell, etc? Whiz has shown he can win with a good QB. He's also, like MANY coaches, shown he can't win without one. If they keep him tho, I think they need to at least reassign/fire Graves, promote Keim, and take away some of Whiz's personnel responsibilities.

    not anymore
if this organization keeps Whiz, it means they don't care about winning... and if they don't care about winning, after 20 years, why should I? Bidwells, it's that poor excuse for a head coach or it's me. I am simply not putting up with this team if the very owners don't care if they win. I'll be gone. Auditions for a new team start tomorrow and will only be abandoned when they announce the turfing of Winzingnothing.

Wiz's refusal to address the O-line in the early rounds is exactly whats gotten us in this position. So you're holding him responsible yet you want him to continue to do the same thing he's done. Barkley is a Leinart 2.0 and nothing more, there are solid running backs in free agency so lets get the o-line and trade for a QB like Rivers but why continue the pattern that's failed the past 3 years? No disrespect intended, we're all talking as frustrated fans here.

    Real Question?
Can we afford to lose Horton at the expense of keeping Wiz? I like Wiz, I really do but can we afford to take a step back on defense, even if we figure out a way to take a step forward on offense?

    But that begs the question
If we keep horton, but he becomes HC, will our defense suffer anyway for lack of him as DC? If he still largely acts as DC in the HC role, will his HC responsibilities suffer? The perfect scenario in my mind is that Horton stays as DC, any scenario other then that, regardless of who becomes HC, I think will negatively effect this defense going forward. On topic, as of right now I don't feel inclined to have the Cards fire whiz, but if they do, I'd rather see Reid take over and do everything in his power to keep horton as DC then have horton take over as HC.

    Real worst case
What I really REALLY don't want to see is whiz gets fired, horton leaves out of respect to whiz (or just desire to coach some where else), and we end up with neither of them. If they fire whiz, they HAVE to find a way to keep horton in some capacity, and if that means making him HC over Reid, I'm willing to take that risk rather then gain Reid and lose horton. People seem to forget it was whiz who stood by Horton through the first 7 games last year when our D was a mess and must pundits were putting the blaim on Horton's overly complex schemes. I doubt Horton has forgotten that.
