The Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt on December 31.

Since then there have been various reports about who the Cardinals are targeting and who is interested in the job. Some of the candidates are former coaches with varying degrees of success, while others are coordinators searching for that first head coaching job.

Below is a list of the most likely candidates along with notes pertaining to their likelihood of coming to Arizona. The rankings will change along with the winds of the search.

Rank Coach Reason
#1
Darrell Bevell

The Cardinals are reportedly bringing the Seahawks OC in for an interview.
Rank Coach Reason
#2
Bruce Arians

The Colts offensive coordinator will meet with the Cards, but he may not keep DC Ray Horton around
Rank Coach Reason
#3
Jay Gruden

Gruden interviewed with the Cardinals last week and they appear to be looking for an offensive-minded coach.
Rank Coach Reason
#4
Ray Horton

Arizona's defensive coordinator does not appear to be going anywhere, but it's worth wondering if the Cardinals view him as head coach material.
Rank Coach Reason
#5
Todd Haley

The Cardinals interviewed Haley, but Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator apparently set a 'very high' price for his services.

DO NOT BRING TODD HALEY BACK IN ANY CAPACITY! Get him off the list and don't even give him consideration.

    I Agree
he was never that much apart of that winning team, I thought Kurt was calling the plays, if Horton goes else where and its possible, I would like to see a winning coach come in here and the only one left is Lovie Smith or Bryan Bellick would be cool both got to super bowl.

    Haley
The addition of Haley is telling....the pool is shrinking and Reid is likely lost. A poorly played hand by Bidwell by mentioning Reid's name in his presser. I just don't think McCoy is serious about AZ, adding Lovie means the defense will change completely....and Haley is the only one (on this list) with offensive acumen.

If Reid signs with KC, the pool shrinks by one...lots of quality candidates still out there. Reid is a good coach but he's not the end-all-be-all.

    HORTON
It sounds sad, but, its such a mess offensively, I dont think anyone wants to come here. Dont get me wrong! If the Bidwills throw around their bank roll then yes, of course, any Coach (including Reid) will work here. But, given the current state of our offense (THE WORST IN THE NFL) I dont think anyone wants to commit to this job. The only coach loyal enough to Bidwill and the only coach loyal to the re-building of this offense is Horton. Why hasnt he been named the head coach yet?

...a Horton HC and Norv Turner OC. I wouldn't exactly be excited about it, though. As much as I love Horton, and would hate to see him go elsewhere -- I just don't get that fuzzy feeling when I think of him as the HC. If Horton is promoted/picked, then they really need to make a bold move with the OC, because I'm with Fitzismyhero on this. The offense is in bad shape. We really have no QB, and I think that is a sticking point with most good coaches. They do not underestimate the impact a QB has on a teams chances.

I'm not convinced Turner would be the perfect fit, but McCoy won't leave Denver to come to AZ for just another OC spot. I don't want Haley. So I'd be open to Norv Turner as OC, if Horton is indeed the HC.

    It's painfully obvious...
The Cardinals had a playoff caliber defense ... so, if they don't give the Head Coach job to Ray Horton is going elsewhere and where does that leave the defense. Anyone ever heard of "cutting off your nose to spite your face"?
    ACK!

But it sounds scary! I agree... If we lose Horton, we better we lose a good D with him. Not saying they wont b good again if he leaves. But they'll need a DC as good as Horton or better to get them playing this good. They cant settle with a Pendergast or Davis type of DC. Remember those days?

Horton is my choice because of what Gary said
if Horton takes a HC job somewhere else than we start over on both offense and defense. Also, why do people keep saying we have no QB? If the Cards get serious and beef up the O-line than we have a solid (and healthy) QB. Kolb was in a groove when he went down in game 5. Give him a healthy RB to balance the offense. Hire a good OC. Extend Horton as DC. Hire a HC to manage it all, and we are back in business.
