listen Listen: John Clayton, ESPN NFL Insider
John tells Doug & Wolf Bruce Arians was set to take the Bears HC job and had both Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm on his staff before Marc Trestman got the job. He also gave us his surprise pick to get the Cardinals gig.

ArizonaSports.com has learned through sources that Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will not retain Ray Horton as defensive coordinator if he indeed lands the vacant Arizona Cardinals head coaching job.

Instead, it appears that Arians has already promised the DC job to Todd Bowles in any situation where he lands a head coaching job.

According to the source, Arians believed that he would land the Chicago Bears job, but that instead went to Marc Trestman, who coached the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League for the last five seasons. Arians had made the promise to Bowles concerning the Chicago opening.

Bowles, 49, spent the 2012 season as a member of Andy Reid's staff in Philadelphia -- half of which was as the defensive coordinator after Juan Castillo was dismissed in October.

The interesting twist is that Arians and Horton are friends, having spent time together on the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff from 2004 to 2010.

ESPN insider John Clayton told Arizona Sports 620's Doug & Wolf Show Wednesday he believes Arians will keep his word to Bowles if he were to accept a head coaching position.

"It sounds very plausible to me because understand loyalty is a very big factor for Bruce Arians," Clayton said.

Clayton believes dynamics could play a factor in Arians' decision to accept the Cardinals job or not and thinks he may not be the right guy to take the reins.

"I think also what it does do is it shows you that maybe this might not be the best fit," Clayton said "Wouldn't surprise me if the Cardinals offer [Arians]. He's one of the hot coaches and he's a coach that I think would be one that would be doing a very good job.

"But does he really want to go to a team that may not have a quarterback and leave Andrew Luck and so he can stick to his guns on that and if it's true that he wants Todd Bowles as his defensive coordinator to keep the job he's obviously not bringing Whiz and Russ Grimm he knows that's not going to work but you can kind of see all those things kind of fitting together and maybe if he's offered the job it's one that's still going to go to somebody else."

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Arians is scheduled to meet with the Cardinals on Thursday about their head coach vacancy.

The Cardinals also spoke with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell about the job Wednesday.

Clayton said not to count out Bevell, who has become a popular name in recent weeks.

"You know Darrell Bevell grew up in Phoenix and he's all of a sudden become very hot," Clayton explained. "I mean he was in the final three's for Chicago and he thought enough of the Arizona job that he put Jacksonville off for a day to come see the Cardinals [Wednesday]."

    Remember to
that Whiz wanted Bowles ahead of Horton. He also wanted Keith Butler as well but Pitt is keeping him to take over for LeBeau. Bowles has been on teams radars as well so it wouldn't be the worst case scenario. What you all failing to realize is the staff Horton was piecing together was all newbies. If he would have guaranteed Norv Turner coming to AZ as his OC, it would have been his but 2 coordinators without experience is what he brought to the table.

Turn this man away from the facility at once! We dont need this scum fingering out defense and firing our best staff member for one of his own cronies. Shurely the Bidwill know better than to hire this guy. They might just be creating more bargaining power with other candidates, make it look like they have options.

Why Bidwell taking long to hire Ray Horton
Horton is the defenses favorite, and that can cause some issues later, what happens when Darnell Dockett gets stupid again or anyone for that matter, its hard to discipline friends you worked with for years and so close, its like having your brother get promoted from a lower status and he was cool with (homies), but now he gets a higher rank job and taking orders from him is like "yeah right" its just ray, i think a new voice of command is needed because our defense was good but they still lacked a bit of discipline(dockett, wilson etc) and that is because they all are so cool with Ray

    HEAD COACH SEARCH
I can apprciate Arians giving his word and holding to it, the mark of a good man. BUT he should not be making a promise that he probably can't keep. If he is worth being a HC, then he should also know that Ray is better than Bowles. Keep Ray give Bowles a different position on his staff. Bidwell should also be involved with his staff.

If Horton isn't upset yet he should be now.
This should not even be considered. The best thing this team has going for it as far as coaches go is Ray Horton. Who cares if Arian promised Bowles a job if he got a head coaching job. Sounds like a personal problem to me. Looks like the Bidwell apple doesn't fall far from the tree. This idea pisses me off.

    Just Promote Coach Horton Already
This is getting ridiculous. Horton is the man for the job. If Arians thinks he can leverage that much say immediately with the Bidwells he's dreaming. HIRE HORTON and quit putzing around.

    CARDS ARE A JOKE AGAIN
Why not just hire Ken Whisenhunt at this point. he is the best option available.

Do you guys just believe everything?
Do you believe everything that is posted on this site? The report is false, according to Mike Jurecki. I trust him a heck of a lot more than a bunch of anonymous "sources." The sky is not falling...

    Just speculation, but
if whomever gets the HC job is required to keep Horton, then the Cards clearly value Horton over the other candidates, so just promote Horton.

    False report
Jurecki talked with Arians agent and flatly claimed that report is false. Horton would be retained as Arians DC. This is the best scenario that could happen for the Cards going forward.
