Just hours after Ray Horton was released from his contract with the Arizona Cardinals, he was hired by the Cleveland Browns as defensive coordinator.

Horton's contract is for four years and $8 million, according to Arizona Sports' Kyndra de St. Aubin.

It was expected the coach would find work quickly and initial speculation led to Cleveland.

While Bruce Arians was finishing up his introductory press conference as the Cardinals' next head coach, Horton to Cleveland was confirmed first by ESPN's Adam Schefter and then the team.

Horton told de St. Aubin he received a phone call Friday from the Browns to discuss the job with him. He had interviewed with the Browns for their head coaching position earlier in the month and felt it was a good interview.

Horton believes the Browns' defense has a ton of upside and is an extraordinary young team.

Cleveland is assembling a new staff, led by first-time head coach Rob Chudzinski. The Browns have also landed Michael Lombardi as the vice president of player personnel.

Horton is flying to Cleveland Friday night to meet with team officials.

Horton interviewed for the Cardinals' head coaching job, and has been the architect of their defense over the last two seasons. In 2012, Arizona ranked 12th in the league in total defense.

In Arizona he was the defensive coordinator for Ken Whisenhunt, who took a job as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator on Thursday.

Horton said he got a phone call from Whisenhunt Thursday night, and his former boss thanked him for his time in Arizona and said maybe they would work together again in the future.

    Good for Ray!!!
The Cardinals stabbed this man in the back...He should have been hired as the HC in Ariz. I hope this happens, this will haunt the Cardinals for quite a while. If they didn't have any intention on hiring Horton as the HC, they should have let him go when they fired Whiz. And i truly believe they had no intention of hiring Horton, they hoped he would just play nice and work for the next HC and be a good soldier. Ray, I wish you luck, be happy to get out of this mess!!!

    R U Kidding me
How the heck did we stab him in the back? He interviewed like 6 or 7 others did before him. They asked him who his staff would be. Unfortunately it was not a strong staff by any means which would have been rookie coordinators along with this rookie HC would be a recipe for disaster. If he could have landed Norv as OC that may have landed him the job. Horton asked for his release!

    Best Wishes
Ray Horton did a great job as the DC. However, just because he is leaving doesn't mean we still can't have a good defense. No one is indispensible and Ray Horton is just one guy. The Cardinals still have great players on defense that can make plays. Times change and people move on...if you are a Cardinal fan back your team up and don't make assumptions before things actually happen! If this article is true, thank you Ray Horton for everything you did for the Cards. I am sure you know its part of the biz.

Norv Turner was going to be his choice and the Cardinals still didn't go for it.

    I agree
I agree with disgusted d and chargecards. Ray did not have a strong enough staff to follow. That would have been real bad for us. Ray needs to find a strong staff to follow him before he can be taken seriously about being a HC. Every team wants to know about your staff. Cards did their due diligance. Ray was the first interview. I love Ray but even Ray had to know he needed a better staff! If you are a true fan and know anything about football, you would understand what the Cardinals just did. They did not stab in him the back. They let him interview with whomever he wanted for a HC.

    Mr. Horton THANKS
Dear Mr. Horton, we the fans are very sorry you are leaving, but i am also extremely happy for you as well. You are now able to get away from this joke of an organization and the owners who continue to destroy it. i wish the bidwells would just leave this town so that maybe we could eventually have a chance for a solid organization. Mr. Horton i wish you and your family the very best. we all know the bidwells would not have let u do what u needed to do anyways, just like they did with wiz and refusing to bring in o line help.

    Cards lied to him
If they felt that the people he was going to bring in weren't qualified, they should have told him that. Because I guarantee you that if they would have just been upfront with him, that their plan was to hire a offensive minded head coach, Horton could have prepared job intereviews to be a DC somewhere else since he would have known that the new guy was most likely going to bring in his own DC OR they should have dismissed him when they fired Whiz. Typical of ownership to do this. It doesnt surprise me. Hopefully they can fix this. If not, IM NO LONGER A CUSTOMER OF THE ARIZONA CARDINALS.

    He didn't qualify...
...as HC for any other teams either. Horton interviewed for Cleveland and Buffalo, and neither of them chose him as HC either. You can't blame the Cardinals for not going with him. In the end, I think Arians was the better HC decision. The initial reports and headlines stated "Arians in, Horton out". That stuff breeds controversy. It implied Arians is having Horton fired. It doesn't look like that is the case. It looks like Horton got PO'd for the Cardinals not choosing him as HC, and now wants out.

Granted, Arians MAY ultimately get what he wanted in a Bowles DC -- it sounds like Horton is the one cutting the ties. If that is the case, then I say "Go!†If he can't man up to the fact that no other teams saw him as HC material yet either, and can't fulfill the contract to the team that gave him his first shot at DC, and wants to abandon the players that believe in him, then let him leave. We'll see if Cleveland can provide him the same defensive players the Cardinals did in order for his scheme to succeed, if he does indeed go to Cleveland.
