Just hours after Ray Horton was released from his contract with the Arizona Cardinals, he was hired by the Cleveland Browns as defensive coordinator.

Horton's contract is for four years and $8 million, according to Arizona Sports' Kyndra de St. Aubin.

It was expected the coach would find work quickly and initial speculation led to Cleveland.

While Bruce Arians was finishing up his introductory press conference as the Cardinals' next head coach, Horton to Cleveland was confirmed first by ESPN's Adam Schefter and then the team.

Horton told de St. Aubin he received a phone call Friday from the Browns to discuss the job with him. He had interviewed with the Browns for their head coaching position earlier in the month and felt it was a good interview.

Horton believes the Browns' defense has a ton of upside and is an extraordinary young team.

Cleveland is assembling a new staff, led by first-time head coach Rob Chudzinski. The Browns have also landed Michael Lombardi as the vice president of player personnel.

Horton is flying to Cleveland Friday night to meet with team officials.

Horton interviewed for the Cardinals' head coaching job, and has been the architect of their defense over the last two seasons. In 2012, Arizona ranked 12th in the league in total defense.

In Arizona he was the defensive coordinator for Ken Whisenhunt, who took a job as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator on Thursday.

Horton said he got a phone call from Whisenhunt Thursday night, and his former boss thanked him for his time in Arizona and said maybe they would work together again in the future.

    He Quit on the Cards
He told Keim to release him & the Cardinals did! Horton quit on his 3 yr deal after 2, not the Cardinals fired him.

I don't like coming up with a subject.
Geez, most of you act like Horton is the only coach in the world who knows about defense. Horton is a good coach but let's not forget good coaches need good talent. Horton may be gone but the same players who excelled last year are still there, so relax. In this era of football you need to put up points and Arians is one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. Horton becoming HC wouldn't have fixed the offense and what good OC would come here with no QB? We got lucky with Bruce.

    Cardinals
I was actually hoping for once the Bidwills would show some class and hire from within. It turns out I was wrong. Horton is going to make one heck of a coach!

You can spin it anyway you want...Who is this we you are talking about anyway? You are not in this front office...Why did they keep Horton and the other defensive coaches and fire Whiz? I understand totally that Horton may not have been ready to be a HC, but why string him along? I am not a fan of the Cardinals, but I can still see that he was used in this situation and was going to be a backup plan if they did not get one of the guys that they really wanted to be the HC.

Nobody said that Horton was indespensable
but he sure didn't quit on this team either...They quit on him when they decided to go another direction even though they decided to keep him when they fired Whiz. Why would Arians want someone on his staff that he didn't choose? It just wasn't going to work. BTW, these are most of the same players that Horton inherited when he got here. He must have done something right to bring out the "talent" that produced the defense they had this year...

    Let me ask you this
For all you Horton fans out there, let me ask you this. How would you react if Horton received a HC job offer for another team and left without a second thought? Because that is what he would of done. Just a bunch of hypocrites, we fans asked for change and we got it. A new HC is not going to come in and not hire his people. This league is a business, Horton would of had no loyalty if he was given a HC job somewhere else. Also even if he stayed Horton would of been gone after next season when his contract was up, he just left earlier than expected. Stop with the emotions and look at the facts.

    Look at the Facts?
The fact is that the Cardinals should have fired Horton along with his defensive assistants when they fired Whiz...Why did they not do that?! I am not a fan of Horton or the Cardinals, but logic says to me and most people on this site that the Cardinals had no intention of hiring him as HC, but they wanted to keep him as the DC. There is no way any coach with balls would have wanted him on his staff and that is exactly what happened. Ray Horton was fired, he didn't quit, and it should have happened a while ago!!!

    So why
didn't Horton get the Browns or Bills jobs then?

    Arians is best for Cards
Ray Horton did a great job with the defense. However, it's the offense that needs serious fixing, and that's not Horton's strength. Arians did this past year: 1. Took over as OC for a team which won 2 games last year 2. Took a rookie QB and started him from day 1 to great success 3. Took over as head coach for a team whose head coach was basically absent most of the season due to cancer treatment -- not his plan, not his personnel, and not his true authority 4. This team (Indy) had one of the largest roster turnovers with a lot of rookies 5. Won 9 games, lost 3 with all of the above

    Good luck Ray
He inherits an up and coming young defense, stays out of the NFC West, and with the high coach turnover in Cleveland, the chances of him getting a shot at HC there within the next 3 years is excellent. Ray will be fine.
