listen Listen: Gil Brandt, NFL.com analyst & longtime Cowboys personnel guru
Gil talks to Doug & Wolf about some prospects in the NFL draft and raves about the Cardinals hire of Tom Moore.

As far as authorities on the NFL go, Gil Brandt would rank near the top of the list.

A former personnel man in the league who is now an analyst for NFL.com, he is respected when it comes to his thoughts on the league.

So his thoughts on what the Cardinals have done lately -- specifically the hire of Bruce Arians as head coach and then Tom Moore as assistant head coach/offense -- should make one take notice.

"Well they ought to be put in jail for stealing, to get Tom Moore," Brandt told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Tuesday. "Tom Moore is one of the all-time great people and one of the really all-time great coaches, as far as I'm concerned."

Moore, 74, brings a wealth of experience with him to the desert, including time as the offensive coordinator in Indianapolis when the Colts won the Super Bowl in 2006.

"I think that's a great hire," Brandt added, before turning his attention to Arians, who is tasked with turning around a team that went 5-11 last season and had the second-worst scoring offense in the NFL and the worst in terms of yardage.

"I thought Arians did a great job this year," Brandt said of his time as interim head coach and offensive coordinator in Indianapolis. Arians got the job when head coach Chuck Pagano had to leave the team due to leukemia, and compiled a 9-3 record while he was at the helm. "They scored 40 less points than their opponents and won 11 games. They had a big deficit in turnovers, they won 11 games. They had a big deficit in sack differential and won games.

"So he must have done something right."

    Pretty cool
He should feel right at home here then. This team can give him major deficits in just about every meaningful statistical category you can think of.

    And yet...
If bowles is a flop, if this defense regresses, a dynamic offense won't matter, people will still be upset. Now if the offense is suddenly so good we make the playoffs people won't be overly upset, but unless we come home with a super bowl there will still be grumblings that if we'd kept horton we'd have gone all the way. So yeah, I hope Moore and Arians prove to be a steal, I hope they do turn this offense around, but ultimately its Bowles and this defense that will likely define Arian's legacy in AZ, which is kind of sad.

    I agree^
People are going to complain all season if the D doesn't shape up to even half of what Horton had it at, which they can. But we've got to give Bowles a chance, he didn't single handedly ruin the Eagles D, Juan Castillo did. In fact, I clearly remember the Eagles @ Bengals game where the D kept Dalton on his toes. It was the 4 or 5 turnovers in a matter of seconds that killed them that game. So I have a little faith in Bowles, but I had a lot of faith in Horton.

Unless the team makes the Super Bowl?
I'm all for positive expectations but thats a ridiculous statement. If the Cards can get in the playoffs as a Wild Card then the season should be deemed an ultimate success.

    It's all about
improving the roster! Top to bottom there is much to be done but you have to have the staff in place first. Then they'll start assessing needs in FA & the draft. I don't see us doing much in FA with the way we are against the cap this coming season!

off season. The last two seasons made being a fan very difficult. At least there is some hope and a little excitement with the new coaches.

    Exciting Times
Well, if jail is the price to pay to compete....then so be it! Coach Moore's offense knowledge and Coach Arian's direction, we as fans are in for some "Exciting Times". Both understand our needs and have the experience's to get us going into the right direction and back into the playoffs. Working the QB position will require a different perspective than what we've seen in the past. Coach Arian's work with Payton Manning will give an incite as to where the Cardinals QB's need to strive for.

    Cards!
I can't wait for the football season to start! Why must I be subjected to the NBA and MLB for what seems like 8 months a year, and the NFL season goes by in what seems like a few weeks???

    Defense is overrated now
Having a great defense is nice, but the fact is you don't need a great defense if you have a good offense. The NFL is an offensive league, from the players at receiver, the QBs, and the rules which protect both. If you have a great defense and little offense (like the Cards this year), you still lose a ton of games. If you have a great offense and OK defense, you make the playoffs. That's why Ray Horton isn't the Cards HC and Bruce Arians is.
