John Clayton talks to Doug and Wolf about the future of 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.

It's now the second-longest running plot line in Arizona sports -- the Cardinals and their search for a quarterback to at least somewhat capably fill the shoes of Kurt Warner.

It's been three seasons since Warner retired from the NFL, and though they've tried six different players in the role, most believe the Cardinals are still looking that guy.

The 2013 NFL Draft is deep with names, but probably lacks a franchise-type quarterback that can fill the position for years to come.

That leaves free agency as the number-one option for the Cardinals in their search this offseason.

One of the more intriguing players who could become available is San Francisco's Alex Smith. The seven-year veteran lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick, who helped lead the 49ers to their first Super Bowl appearance in 18 years and is clearly the quarterback of the future for their franchise. San Francisco has said they'll try to trade Smith rather than just release him and his $7.5 million salary (and $9.75 million cap hit) for 2013. They've also stated that if they can't trade Smith, they'll simply keep him -- which most believe is just posturing.

ESPN NFL insider John Clayton joined Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 620 Thursday, and said he believes the 49ers have a plan in place for Smith.

"Oh, they're bluffing in that way because they're trying to get trade value and in some ways, they need to get trade value because I would have to think that if he's released, he'll make a beeline to Arizona and compete against the 49ers two times a year for the next several years," Clayton said.

Smith was the first overall pick of the 2005 draft by the 49ers, and struggled for his first five years in the league. But under the tutelage of head coach Jim Harbaugh, who took over the Niners in 2011, Smith has improved greatly. The former Utah QB has thrown for 4,881 yards and 30 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions over the last two years while racking up a 19-5-1 record as a starter.

"Knowing that the 49ers probably don't want (Smith to go to a division foe), the best thing to do is hang on to him and see if you can trade him to an AFC team, maybe the Cleveland Browns -- I think the Browns would be the most interested," Clayton said.

    why
why do people keep talking about Alex Smith. He is a decent scrambler, but he does not have a quick release. Kolb on the other hand is not good at scrambling, but has a quick release. Smith has only been good until recent, so if he came to Arizona I don't think it would work out well. He would come without a running game and a below par offensive line. I say let Smith go elsewhere. Players going to rival teams usually don't turn out well. Look at Nash going to L.A. what good has he done there?

    QB
Bruce Arians has a track record of coaching the QB position so I feel confident that Alex Smith would do well under him. But, I also think that the heavy emphasis on the O-Line will fare well for Kolb, if he's our QB.

    Alex Smith
would be a great addition to the Cardinals. His value is in his ability to control the ball. He limits his interceptions. Alex is intelligent, mobile and healthy. I doubt very seriously that the 49'rs will allow the possibility of Alex coming to the Cardinals. They would have a nightmare having to face Alex Smith twice a year. But the QB competition would push Kolb to step up or step off. That would be a battle all Cardinal fans would love to see.

    Free Alex SF
With the draft help on the line and draft help with the running game coupled with Arians coaching the offense our QB will be better. However for the money Alex Smith is a safer gamble then Kolb cause he limits his int. and stayers healthy. Smith has big game experience as well. Niners won't release they take whatever they can get for Alex from an AFC team. I bet Alex doesn't sign an extension with what ever the team the niners send him to and walks to wherever he chooses after his contract is up. Could be AZ then especially after he sees the improvement to the line and running game in AZ.

..I almost laughed off my chair when you said Kolb has a quick release! Quick release requires you to have your eyes up and reading the defense...not running for your life. Lol, I bet he wish he had a quick release....he wouldn't get sacked as much and could throw away the ball.

    Smith is good because
...he has an Oline, dominant defense, and powerful run game. 2 of those 3 things are missing here....and it's a bit of a reach to call the AZ defense dominant when they game up more than 50 points to the seahawks!
