Will the Arizona Cardinals be able to find their next quarterback by way of a division rival?

That's apparently what they want to find out.

According to NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport, the team "will express interest in a possible trade" for San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith. However, as Rapoport notes, the Cardinals are "VERY pessimistic" that the 49ers will trade with a division rival.

They have good reason to be, as out of the 25 trades made in 2012, not one was between division rivals.

Smith, who was supplanted by Colin Kaepernick during the 2012 season, has been a rumored trade candidate ever since. A 28-year-old who really came into his own the last two seasons, Smith completed better than 70 percent of his passes for 1,737 yards and 13 touchdowns last season while being intercepted just five times. He had a QB rating of 104.1.

His best game was against the Cardinals in Glendale, when he completed 18-of-19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a 24-3 Monday night win.

    Won't happen
Why would SF want to strengthen AZ? This isn't a McNabb situation, where he was obviously on the downside of his career - Smith was having a great resurgence before being injured and replaced by Kaep. Unless AZ gives them a deal impossible to refuse like a strong player in return or a first round pick (which AZ woudl be crazy to do), SF will have enough of a market with other teams to trade him safely out of the division.

    Razorback!!!! No Ute!!!
I am personally praying tonight that the connection of Mr. Jason Licht bgs us the new starting quarterback for our Arizona Cardinals - MR. RYAN "I GOT THE BEST GUNS IN THE NFL" Mallett!!! With Gambo wanting the Card's to go after him three years ago, we should have done it!!! Everybody was afraid of his attitude, but he is a winner, and with that, you will have attitude!!! With Tom Brady grooming him, we forget how Mr. Tom Brady came into the league out of Michigan and who he replaced! Bruce Arians is a QB man, and he will be the one that will bring Ryan into this league

    not smart
not sure why cards would want him. It would give the edge to SF. They know everything about him, how to rattle him, etc. We dont have a running game or OL good enough to over come the edge SF would have. Maybe use ALex to make another trade for QB.

I think I agree with this - SF knows everything about Smith and could game plan to expoit weaknesses that perhaps only they are aware of so why not send him to AZ? It's almost a "what, me worry?" situation for them. Plus (I said this a few weeks ago), Harbaugh is just arrogant enough to make that trade, feeling that SF could still beat the Cards consistently even with Smith at QB.

    Interesting
but I'm not surprised that there is so much speculation about the Cardinal's QB next season. Fact is no one knows at this time. I think Kolb (if he will restructure his contract) with a line that can protect him may be the best option unless the 49ers would trade Alex Smith. Will Ryan Mallet, Matt Flynn be available? I would like to know why the Cardinals offered Kolb such a contract. His salary along with a 2nd round pick and the DRC trade turned out to be a big mistake.
