This morning I wrote that I agreed with what NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported about the Cardinals; that they were very pessimistic the Niners would ever trade Alex Smith to a division rival.

That column had the shelf life of day-old bread. Right after it posted, the Niners traded Smith to the Chiefs.

Clearly the Cardinals don't benefit from the move…on multiple levels. I'm not sure they were ever on the Niners' list, but clearly, they're off it now. San Francisco now has 15 draft picks (three coming from expected compensation picks), the latest of which was acquired for what was essentially a spare part in Smith. It gives them tremendous flexibility moving forward.

I wouldn't have wanted the Cardinals to attempt to top the Chiefs' offer. Smith is a good quarterback, but I look at him more as a product of his environment. He had a lot of talent around him in San Francisco. Maybe he'll be a perfect fit in Kansas City. I suspect he'll be…OK.

So what's next for the Cards?

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm beginning to give more and more though to Gambo's idea about Ryan Mallett. Tom Brady is clearly not going anywhere, so Mallett really isn't being groomed for any type of promotion. He's got the cannon arm Bruce Arians has implied he's looking for. By sheer osmosis, whatever attitude problems he had coming into the draft should have been cured by hanging with Brady. The Patriots only have five draft picks this year so they'd be looking to add. Oh, and Cards personnel man Jason Licht was employed by New England when they drafted Mallett.

If you're going to select a quarterback with your 2nd or 3rd round pick anyway, can you get one who is better than Mallett? In this draft? Questionable at best.

This piece in the Boston Herald reports the Patriots aren't actively shopping him, but suggests they would want better than the 3rd rounder they used on Mallett in return.

WEEI says it's time to move Mallett and suggests the Cardinals as one of the landing spots.

I still wouldn't mind the Cards taking a look at Nick Foles as well.

I say, it depends. While Mallett lit it up at Arkansas it's important to note that he had a coach that was one of the best play callers in the game and was surrounded by a great core of receivers. However, right in the middle of his best season he was hurt in the Auburn game an in came Tyler Wilson. He too lit it up despite the loss on the road.

    cont..
Tyler became the starter following Mallett and put up similar numbers even save his senior season with John L. Smith as HC and none of the great receivers Mallet had. Mallet has too much attitude for my liking where Wilson is a team guy with a win at all cost mentality. So to answer the question, "..can you get one who is better than Mallett?", I say yes if Tyler Wilson is still available.

Mallett for "better than the 3rd rounder"?
There was a related comment thread a few days ago about Alex Smith: yeah, he was a 1st round pick and yeah he's has a good year and a half with SF but he's not worth a 1st round pick in a trade today (so the experts say). So..... I'm wondering why Mallett would be worth "better than the 3rd round(er)" now? What's he done to justify a trade pick higher than where he was taken two years ago? There's also that "no contract extension for players drafted in 2011 until after completing their 3rd year" thing in the CBA which makes him even less desireable.

It's not that Mallett would be worth more than a 3rd rd pick, it's probably more like it's not worth it to the Pats to trade him unless they get more than a 3rd for him. Think about it this way - they spent a 3rd on him, have invested time and effort in him, and he's had Brady to learn from. After all that, since you don't HAVE to get rid of him, why let him go unless you can get more than you spent on him?

    I say no to Mallett
I think Tyler Bray will be a better prospect working under B.A. and Tom Moore. Bray is raw, but his arm talent and upside is huge. I say save money and take Bray in round two.

    Mallet
I am an Arkansas grad that has followed the team closely for years. I am intrigued by the Mallet question. The guy mostly lit up SEC defenses during his stint at AR. He has a cannon of an arm and is the tall pocket passer that has been so valued in the NFL. Arians has said he values the deep ball and therefore a guy that can throw it. Mallet is clearly a guy that can. He is totally unproven in the NFL as being the backup to Brady does not really afford playing time. However, now that Alex Smith is not available, I think Mallet is a real option to consider.

    Unlikely,
Who has said Mallet is even available. Brady is old and Belicheck is a great coach. Mallet is in New England for the duration. By the way please no Matt Cassel, I am a diehard SC fan and scared of QBs from SC.
