The Arizona Cardinals’ linebacking corps have been hit hard in the offseason, but the team made a move Friday to add some depth to the group, signing rookie free agent Derrell Johnson.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pound linebacker played collegiately at East Carolina. CBS Sports projected him to go in the sixth or seventh round of the 2014 draft, but he did not hear his name called. The Miami Dolphins originally signed him on May 12, but released him on July 29.
Johnson, 24, led East Carolina with a career-high 80 tackles as a senior in 2013, also adding eight sacks and 14 tackles for loss while starting all 13 games. The outside linebacker was a four-year starter for the Pirates and a two-time All-Conference USA defender. He finished his collegiate career with 221 tackles, 19 sacks and 35 tackles for loss.
Johnson will wear No. 49 for the Cardinals, the team said. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.
