The NFL preseason is a time when young players try to make a name for themselves, while others come out to make a statement.
Cincinnati Bengals’ cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick fell into the latter category during Week 3 of the preseason against the Arizona Cardinals.
During the first quarter, Cardinals wide receiver Ted Ginn was returning a punt when Kirkpatrick laid a devastating hit.
Kirkpatrick’s hit may have escaped officials — there was no flag thrown on the play — but did not escape the eyes of the NFL. According to Pro Football Talk, Kirkpatrick was fined $22,500 for the helmet-to-helmet hit.
The fine is the first of Kirkpatrick’s career. He was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Bengals. He played his college ball at Alabama.
