The NFL has elected to fine Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas after his illegal chop block in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals that injured defensive end Calais Campbell.

Thomas signed a four-year, $2.42 million deal with Denver in 2011, one that included a $384,000 signing bonus. His contract calls for him to earn $645,000 in 2014, meaning the fine amounts to about 1.3 percent of his 2014 salary.

The Broncos won the matchup 41-20, though the Cardinals were more upset over what happened to Campbell.

That punishment is not likely to appease the Cardinals, who are expected to be without one of their defensive captains for one to three weeks.

Since the game, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has maintained that it is one of the dirtiest plays he’s ever seen on the field, while linebacker Larry Foote called it a ‘black eye’ to football.

Campbell, who finished last season with 58 total tackles and nine sacks, had 16 tackles with one sack and one interception in 2014.
