Arizona Cardinals’ Tony Jefferson: ‘I don’t really remember the game’

TEMPE, Ariz. — Tony Jefferson finished Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles with a team-leading 12 total tackles.

He also had one hit on Eagles quarterback Nick Foles and one pass defensed.

The second-year safety does not remember any of it, as he suffered a concussion at some point Sunday, though he did not miss any time because he did not realize then it had happened. As of Thursday he was still going through the league’s concussion protocol.

“I don’t really remember the game,” he said Thursday. “I just remember when I started driving, I stopped and I just stopped for 30 minutes, I was like, ‘what just happened?’ I don’t remember what happened.

“It was kind of scary. I went home and watched the film on the iPad, it was like seeing you on autopilot. It was pretty weird.”

Jefferson then pointed to the number of tackles he accumulated.

“I might have to push autopilot a couple more times,” he joked.

Jefferson is not entirely sure when he sustained the injury, though he speculated it may have happened during a kickoff.

At any rate Jefferson, who leads the Cardinals with 50 tackles, will not be able to return to the field until the doctors clear him to do so. He was listed as “limited” on Thursday’s injury report, which was a step forward after he did not practice Wednesday.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said the team is hopeful Jefferson will be able to go Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, but understands “concussions are a funny thing” so they’ll just have to wait and see.

“I’m fine,” Jefferson said. “It’s just one of those things you don’t want to rush back. This is your brain you’re talking about, you don’t want to do anything like that. We’ll see what they say, but I feel fine.

“I’ve heard a lot of stories. You know, you feel fine, you go back and you do it again. We’ve got a long season ahead of us; I don’t want to rush back.”
