They just keep on winning.

The Arizona Cardinals didn’t score a point during the final 51:06 of the game Sunday, but thanks to a solid defensive effort, they were able to hold off the Detroit Lions in a 14-6 win at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The win pushes the Cardinals’ record to 9-1, the league’s best mark.

In holding the Lions without a touchdown in a game for the first time since 2009, many players filled key roles for the Cardinals defense. According to the team’s general manager, none stood out more than cornerback Patrick Peterson.

“You look at a guy who has played, in the past several weeks against two of the elite receivers,” Steve Keim told Doug and Wolf Monday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “He held (Dallas’) Dez Bryant to two catches. He held (Detroit’s) Calvin Johnson to five catches. He is absolutely playing excellent football right now.”

Johnson, widely considered the league’s best receiver, managed only five catches for 59 yards in Sunday’s contest. He was targeted 12 times. Peterson matched up with him on a majority of Detroit’s snaps.

“The thing that some people don’t understand is the kind of stress and pressure we put on our corners,” Keim said. “We don’t give them a ton of help and those guys are out on an island, and to have to cover for several seconds with Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant and those kind of guys, it’s a tough task.

“But Pat has played excellent football. He’s played focused and he’s played with a lot of urgency.”
