TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have been searching for a big, short-yardage back since Jonathan Dwyer was removed from the team in Week 3.

That search led them to Michael Bush, a veteran of six NFL seasons who last played for the Chicago Bears in 2013.

Speaking of Bush, who is listed at 6-foot-1 and 245-pounds, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Wednesday they added a player with “some veteran savvy and some size.”

“The problem is we don’t have many padded practices left, and this will not be one of them, so it will be very hard to get him up to speed as fast as we want to,” he added. “We didn’t sign him for this week; we signed him for the long haul, so we’ll have him ready when we need him. We’ll go from there.”

In his career, Bush has rushed for 3,250 yards and 29 touchdowns, while also gaining another 1,010 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver out of the backfield.

A fourth-round pick out out Louisville in 2007 by the Oakland Raiders, his best season came in 2011, when he ran for 977 yards and seven touchdowns while catching 37 passes for 418 yards and a score.

He signed with the Bears the following season, but was waived after two years. He had been out of football since then, until the Cardinals came calling.

He knows he has work to do to get on the field, but said Arians’ words about his future with the team “puts a smile on his face.”
