Al McCoy doesn't see Suns parting with Nash

The voice of the Phoenix Suns Al McCoy is weighing in on the future of Steve Nash.

Nash's age-defying performance against the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday -- in which he broke the Suns' franchise record for assists and dropped 30 points in the process -- showed the two-time MVP is as dominant as ever.

So it's no surprise that McCoy doesn't envision the Suns parting with Nash anytime soon.

"As I've mentioned many times, I don't know what the consideration would be if you were even thinking about trading Steve Nash because you'd have to really be able to get something fantastic to make that move right now," McCoy told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Friday.

You can't argue with that sentiment. Nash is leading the NBA in assists and is arguably one of the best true point guards in the NBA this season, in spite of the Suns' troubles.

Nash's play isn't showing his mileage and McCoy believes he's still on top of his game.

"His shots are fantastic, he's moving the ball, doing a lot of positive things -- he even had a blocked shot the other night in that game in New Orleans," McCoy stated.

The Suns are 8-13 on the year and 4-6 in their last ten games entering Friday's contest in Houston. This team is definitely in rebuilding mode -- no doubt about it -- and lacking the necessary talent to contend in the immediate future.

Still, McCoy believes the talk surrounding dealing Nash is premature.

"We're not even halfway through this season and it's (trading Nash) just a situation as I said where I think its conversation," McCoy explained. "I can't see anything ever culminating unless as I said, it would have to be something pretty fantastic, and I don't see that on the horizon at all."

It's awfully hard to imagine that Nash will want to hang it up anytime soon -- especially if he can stay healthy. So is it better to get the prospects for him now and set Nash free for a final chance to win? Or should he retire with the Suns, regardless of the team's play around him?

One thing's for certain: the Suns' franchise star isn't letting the team's struggles -- or the talk of trade rumors -- dampen his spirit.

"Steve seems very happy to be in a Phoenix Suns uniform," McCoy said

very much. Do you personally believe that Nash will re-sign with the Suns this summer when he hits Free agency and if so why? Loyalty is why Nash did not ask for a trade the last two years and beyond as he has watched Sarver dismantle a contender. Nash said as much when he said he honors his contracts/word. He won't have the issue of loyalty this FA. One can't say he hasn't been loyal. So besides that, why would he stay in PHX?

The #1 reason the Suns won't trade Nash is because they have zero chance of obtaining another star Free Agent without Nash. The only reason the Suns and Nash haven't signed an extension because they can't until the summer thanks to the lockout. Since he's an expiring contract, they will never get full value for Nash. They will have a quality draft pick in a year where many are calling it the best draft of the last 25 years and they are one star FA from competing. Keeping Nash is just plain smart.

... billando. Who will come and play with Nash? We are not going to land Dwight Howard, or anyone that will make us a contender fast. There is no doubt that Nash is a class act and has shown this franchise nothing but loyalty and stellar play. But, we cannot keep losing our best players for nothing. If he doesnt sign an extension, then he will be the last of our All Star players to leave without anything in return. If we can get a late 1st round pick, then I say do it.
